Australians - Where are you all????

Hi,

I'm Julie and I live in Sydney. Recently I purchased my first ever chickens 2 Rode Island Reds and 2 light sussex. The girls seemed to have settled in well and love to free range in our yard although it hasn't been trouble free. The day after I bought the girls home Sydney had some very heavy rain and one cough a cold. Its now cleared up with the help of antibiotics but now I have to deal with another bird that has diarrhea. In truth I think she has had it from the start as when she came home her vent was a little dirty. Do people normally have these kind of problems? I've only had the birds 2 weeks so it seems a lot to deal with off the bat. Thanks to the advise on this site I'm giving the girls yoghurt and I hope this helps. I'm looking for to learning more about my girls and meeting new people on this. I was also wondering if anyone can advise me of local clubs I could become a part of?

Hey Julie
welcome-byc.gif
and the Aussie thread.
Light sussex are beautiful birds,
I have haven't had any of those problems before, the area around my birds vents gets dirty but it seems to go away.
I have no idea about the poultry clubs, there are two Aussie threads maybe someone on the other one knows.

Hi, Thanks for your reply. I'll take a look at the other thread and hopefully will find some clubs there. How long have you had your birds? Mine are about 26 weeks. I would have loved chicks but I have a cat and although she is more interested in catching rats rather than birds, I didn't think it best to tempt her. She barely even looks at the chickens which is good. The rhode island reds are starting to eat out of my hands and all the birds come when I walk out the back door, so maybe I have nothing to worry about. They do love the yogurt though.

I've had my birds going on 2 years.
I have younger ones and 3 older birds who are going on 2 years old this year,
I'm glad my cat is scared of my birds, I'm sure she would of liked to try and eat mine.
My birds run to me from half way across the yard, when they see me walk out the back yard.

Hey folks, haven't visited this thread in ages again. Whoop.
How have you other Aussies been? Right now I'm sitting outside being a witness while the rest of the mock trials crew are inside the room listening to a boring opening speech.

I know you're feeling. Been so busy round here. Maybe not with birds but other things, I've had to rush things to get a bit of time on BYC most days. :p
