Looks like a mix to me.

I’ve looked at lots of pictures of Langshans and Marans, as others have suggested she may be, but she doesn’t quite match either. I’m in agreement with you - still thinking she’s some sort of a mix. Curious to see what color eggs she lays.

I can’t think of any mix from a hatchery/feed store that would look like her.

I know nothing about how hatcheries are run, but you make a good point, they probably keep their breeding stock separate so there’s a (relatively) consistent product. I guess it would be easier for a chick to get put in the wrong shipping or brooder box? Also, I got an egg from one of the two new ones. Definitely not Australorp. I’m hoping to get an egg from the other newbie as a point of comparison.

She's hatchery quality, which is why she doesn't lay the dark eggs. Hatcheries care about quantity, not quality.

I agree. I had a Cuckoo Marans in my original flock, she unfortunately died from a respiratory infection that I didn’t catch on to in time. Her eggs came out speckled on occasion, although my friend says the speckles are pretty consistent. This will likely make it MUCH easier to tell who laid what. Thanks for your help!

I missed that she came from a feed store. I'd say hatchery quality Marans then.

Both hens have laid eggs at this point, I’m guessing that the darker of the two is from the Marans, although the speckled one is darker than I’d expect from a bird that is also supposedly an Australorp. Oh well, they are nice sized eggs and I like being able to tell the difference between what my hens are laying.

I think your best bet would be to catch them laying. All of these brown eggs are from australorps. They have a wide range of brown (the 2 circled ones are EEs)
