Australorps breed Thread

Gotro17,
Where did you get your eggs from? Sorry i could not help you at this time. You should be able to tell who is who by 6 weeks with your BA's. The cockerels will be much more developed in the comb and wattle area as far as size not color. Some people also notice the size of the feet and legs on cockerels being larger also than the pullets.

For BAs, it is vent sexing only. None of the feather sexing works for them.

They are not on the list as sexable that way and those trying it on here have never been able to get results better than chance.
Ron,
You are correct, vent sexing only for BA's.

I have no idea what we were suppose to see in the wing pictures above or comparing a 5 month old pullet with a 2 month old cockerel, apparently i missed something.

I certainly wouldn't use that hen in a breeding program...na,an,na!!!

Nope. If I WERE breeding, Zorra wouldn't be in the program. Besides the fact that they are just hatchery birds, she is too big for SOP, goes broody too often and isn't the layer a BA should be. She was a fabulous mother to the 2015 chicks though. If I were to breed one of my 2012 BAs it would be Echo. She is a proper size, great forager and a good layer, never goes broody. But no roosters here so it isn't even a question.

Here are our eggs for this week (7 days.) notice the BA eggs on right, going up around the back. 14/14. Two hens, a nice egg each day

Um what picture?

Oh, THERE is is. Nice collection! I hope your washer doesn't vibrate as much as ours sometimes does, you'll be playing 42 egg cleanup

2 month old cockerel

That comb says cockerel, don't need to even ask about color. So do the saddle feathers.

My 3 month old BA pullets didn't have a comb anywhere close to that.

The secondary feathers is what you're suppose to look at. Rooster's secondary feathers spread apart and connect to the primary feathers while on a hen the secondary feathers stay together and leave a gap between the secondary and primary feathers. For the comb and wattle I was showing how my rooster's comb and wattle were still more pale than my pullets. I've heard people on other forms say that roosters will have a red comb by the time they are 2 months old. I'm just trying to prove that it's best to use more than one method and there is more than just one method when sexing chickens. I know the saddle and hackle feathers are dead giveaways on my rooster.

Birdrain,
Got it now. I will have to check that out when the weather breaks. My point was when a bird is that developed there should be no question of who is a cockerel and who is a pullet which was the original question.

we ate the 3 roosters, and the pullets are now 21weeks old......
when can I expect to start getting eggs??
