Australorps breed Thread

The one on the left. Sorry, since she is the only BA in the picture and the only chicken with a comb that can be seen, I didn't think to specify. You would need to click on the picture to make it bigger to compare to the hens astarra posted.

The "trio" are
  • Persephone - an EE though in the shadows one might think she is black. She is a brown partridge pattern with a black head and tail.
  • One of the Faverolles
  • One of the Partridge Chanteclers

Astarra my Australorps didnt start laying till they were twenty three weeks old. Once my aussies were the second breed to start laying fir me after the orps.

@bruceha2000 Zorra sounds like she is worth her weight in gold, just as a broody!

Well she is hefty. She did do a good job and she let one of the broody Faverolles help, but only during the day. The chicks would go to either of them when they made the "hey, FOOD!" sound but for mama time it was Zorra. Even after they went up to the roost to sleep. The Fav clearly wanted a chick or two to sit next to her but nothing doing.

Then around 2 months later, Zorra forgot she was a "mother" and ignored them entirely other than to chase them AWAY from the same treats she used to call them to come get. The Fav maintained her daily aunt duties hanging out with the chicks for another 3 or 4 weeks.

Given we don't cull here (other than for obvious illness, not happened yet) I don't know if Zorra will be around the next time I get chicks or not. Given the situation I can't really get a half dozen or so new chicks every spring. The "old folks home" here would go bankrupt feeding old girls that are no longer laying.

My girls layed their first egg today! Well, one of them did, lol, I suppose the others didn't really help much. They were born on 9/13/15, so they are 22 1/2 weeks. :)

I accidentally dropped the egg and cracked it, so I had to eat it right away. So yummy!

That first egg is very special!

The others will usually start over then next couple of weeks.

I bet you were saying/thinking "!@#$%^&" as it slid out of your hand. My girls have laid 4,600

eggs since Nov 2012 and I've dropped only one. I don't remember exactly when but I was seriously bummed to have wasted even one egg.
