Australorps breed Thread

Here are some photos of my Australorps. All were bred by tigercreek and FuzzyButtsFarm raised the cockerel until last week. The cockerel is 5 months old and the pullets are 4 months. What do you think?

The cockerel is still in isolation, so I will have to post other views later.

This is the smallest pullet. All the other photos were too blurry.

The tails are looking good, but are still developing.

They have good wide backs. Those are some of tigercreek's Delawares in the shot. They are 1 month younger.

Finally had a chance to take a good look at your Aussie pullets. They look exactly like mine did at that age. I will have to admit I don't like the bald face look of the Australian line. In my honest opinion it reminds me of a vulture. LOL But to each their own.

Oh no, an intercontinental incident over Australorps. What does the American Standard say about clean faces? I'm too lazy tonight to get up and look.

I don't know what the American SOP is but I know what I like. Maybe someone can refresh our memory but I don't remember anyone posting about having bald faces.

Lets play nice now!!! As far as the latest copy of the SOP that would be the American Standard of Perfection (2010). Under Australorp it states FACE: Surface, smooth for the male. Under female it states FACE: Smooth. So if you look at the colored pictures in the SOP (bible) you see a clean smooth face of red but nothing says bald, but I know what he is talking about. The SOP was created over a hundred years ago so breeds would not go extinct and have some uniformity of the different breeds. If you want to breed your own design of chicken, so be it. However, a serious breeder will have a copy of the ASOP and will learn everything they can about that certain breed. Now lets all get back to feeding and watering because its hot as h-ll here.

OK back to feeding and watering. How are your Aussies doing in this heat??? I even put a tarp on their run for more shade and all they want to do is hang out in the barn. Then hens say up on the roost which is 10 ft off the sand floor. When I let them out to free range they don't go anywhere. I'm guessing it's cause of the black coloring.

Thanks for posting this. I just wish they would publish individual copies for each breed but I guess that would be economically unfeasible. I can dream can't I ??

Hi folks,
I prefer our Aussies' clean faces, but personal pref. should be limited by the standard you're working to. Don't know your standard but ours stipulates a clean face so if I choose to breed Aussies, that's what I need to aim for. I like chatting to you folk as there's very little on the Aussie forums here as a couple of you have pointed out. Aussie people here are either old and not net savvy or, as I suspect, the Australorp Club here has alienated lots of us with their attitude and policies to change standards. Although the black/heat theory sounds logical, we have very hot temps. here and Aussies cope as well as any breed . Off to a quality chook auction now, so I'll see what's on offer,
Cheers Geoff from Aus

Right now I have a thermometer that is reading 110 in the sun, another one in the shade reading 105. 97 in the garage with fans on my babies, about 13 SLWs and 13 BA's. That is with the doors open at both ends and a large fan. I am about to take them swimming!!!!. I have no idea how the people cope out west or in Austrailia. I raised chicks and sold them all winter and never had a problem so I think I am done for this year as far as babies go. The good note is that WV temps are supposed to drop next week into the 80's.

Thank goodness you didn't loose your power. There are still so many in your state without power.
