Australorps breed Thread

HI Ron,
I'm a newbie to the chicken world and didn't know what I wanted so I ordered 6 chicks all girls and all different breeds. "Tilly" is very friendly but I handled her alot.

I really like her and probably will order more BA next year. Saw the list and though I would post to say Hi, show off my girl and learn what I can about this wonderful breed.

You are in the right place! There are posters on this thread that win ribbons for the beautiful BAs.

Next year I am going to get some hatching eggs from the Bruce Shermon BAs here in California. My BAs are 18 months old. They are from Cacle Hatchery and are great but not Show Quality.

They started laying from 22 to 26 weeks of age.

Have fun!

s is a baby that we have waited for..we could never get a fertile egg out of this hen..she is in the broody state of mind..My vet came over and taught AI and this was the result..I think hes going to be pretty nice just waiting to see how he feathers out..he has a superb eye and build . he has all but worn all of the feathers off from his head trying to hide under his mom, and hes getting a little big for this so pretty soon I will put him in his own pen. he will not leave her alone .

Hi Aveca ,
as you know I don't need petitioning. I'd send 'em tomorrow if I could! Seriously though, have you caught up with any of the contraversy over here re a syndicate of some form who got govt. permission to import eggs of "Heritage" breeds because our own stocks in certain breeds were too inbred and preservation required new gene imput. That's my understanding anyway! Lots of howls of protest about polluting our own lines. I don't know how your governments work, but usually with polititians if you spin the right line you can sometimes achieve 'miracles'. When I mentioned this importing idea previously, you mentioned a bad Canadian 'syndicate experience, but surely it can be done well? Cheers Geoff from Aus

Aveca, re your pics, I reckon I can see your birds getting better and better. The hen seems nice and broad, but it's hard to really tell with her sitting down. Like the last pic of the roo, but if you just looked at the previous pic, you could pick conformation/carriage issues. Either the buggers won't stand still or they refuse to adopt that perfect pose that shows them to advantage! No wonder the exhibition freaks spend so much time on training for this for the shows. Cheers Geoff from Aus

I posted this as a thread in the breed category and didn't get many replies and still do not know. Here is the original posting:

I was told when I bought them 4 weeks ago as baby chicks they were Australorp and are suppose to be pullets. So, they are going on a month old. I have three of them. Just like to verify this. They came from an Amish family who raise them.

It was suggested in BYC that they may be Jersey Giants, so I don't know. The Amish said they were Australorps. Two have yellow under their feet and one is pinkish. The legs on all of them are black or 'grayish'.

Any help greatly appreciated!!

The yellow to pinkish feet don't necessarily make them jersey giants. The color of the feet can change to the correct color. It is also not standard of perfection but not a breed determinant.

If they are Jersey Giants, they will be much bigger than australorps at a year old, by up to several pounds. They also wont have the Australorp shape.

At least one of them has the curvy shape so I lean toward BAs.

One of the might be a cockerel though.

in our country they do whatever they want and your just along for the ride...doesnt matter how mad you get...actually the canadians had some polet de bresse..they got little superior and on their high horse. sort of thumbed their noses at us..kind of a ha ha lookie what i got and you dont behavior..boy they were under lock and key too..no one outside got them..somehow, some guy from calif talked them out of a few started his own thing..but they were real snobs to him, he just grin and bear their nauseaus behavior just to get the birds..well karma came round , you reap what you sow , so to speak..the entire canadian flock got that avian flu..whole flock every last one had to be bestroyed..so what did they gain? they gained nothing..the few people outside of them up there lost what they had too..so they couldnt draw on us to get their stock back..greenfire has polet, blk and white now down here..something like 400.00 per chick..i would get a box of roosters for sure if i bought any..
