Australorps breed Thread

Anyone know around when black austrolorps start laying? My 6 are 18 wks. Will their eggs start smaller as does the GC that lay?
Thank you

I found my first small pullet egg when my black ones from Privets were about 19 1/2 weeks old. The eggs start out small, but get bigger as they go along. In the beginning, I was finding a couple of the double yolkers, but they went to being single yolked quick.

thank you! We love getting any eggs but the small eggs are driving me nuts. I want these 6 to lay so bad. One has wet vent and is started to squat now.

That's good. If she is sqatting and starts getting noisy while doing that, then you will start getting those eggs that you are waiting for.
thank you:) I do believe she laid today!! I got 2 eggs and one was different than the rest we've gotten, a different color. Are BA constant layers in the beginning or do they take time to get regular as others do?

I have 5 of the Black Australorp girls that started laying those small eggs back in March. The eggs (light brown/beige) started out small and progressed little by little to get bigger as they went. It takes a little time for them to work this out in their system. Those 5 will be a year old the end of this October. I also have 2 pullets (a blue and a splash Australorp) that should start laying soon. I have all of them in with my Splash Australorp cockerel who is the same age as my 2 pullets.

All of my girls, regardless of breed, were pretty constant on how often they laid once they started. Pullets will lay through their first winter, spring and summer then have their first adult moult.

With a lot of breeds, they won't lay much, if at all, the following winter unless you force them with 14 hours of light daily. I choose not to do that since the girls will be here until they die of old age or have to be saved from a slow uncomfortable death due to disease or injury. No need to wear their little bodies down and (hopefully) they will be more productive in later years. I have a 4 Y/O EE that was still laying 2-3 eggs every 4 days all spring and summer.
