Quote: The standard has not changed since 1938 but judging for them can often be off by many judges--get confused by the Orpington standard.
Even with supplemental light they will take longer at this time of the year to start laying eggs.I have 2 26week old BA that are not laying yet. I bought this breed based on reading that they mature around 20-22 weeks and lay well in the winter. I have them on 13 hours of light.
Just wondering if anyone else has had slow maturing BA's.
Check for this on them ..They have the right shape ..Dark Black Eyes , Grey Legs ( light foot pads ) , Red Neck under feathersthis is ginger and spice i think they are australarp!! I am writing to see if anyone has had a hawk kill their chickens of this size?? I am having nightmare of what I came home to one of my teen silkies being eaten my pitt bull chased if off! I seen it lone enough to know it was a red tail hawk!! now I am scare to free range at all!! they don't like being locked up the hawk must be young because it didn't carry the bird away! I have a coved run but its tarped up for our very cold winter!! the cd deal worked for a while I was hoping someone would have some insight on hawks do they come around the same time?? I know that my rooster chased off a bald eagle when I was out there a few months ago but I had to rehome him because he kept attacking my daughter!!
so 6 Months - have they shown any interest in nest boxes ?I have 2 26week old BA that are not laying yet. I bought this breed based on reading that they mature around 20-22 weeks and lay well in the winter. I have them on 13 hours of light.

I am at work all day, so I only get to watch them on the weekends. The one that looks ready to lay has shown no interest in the nesting boxes. I checked her pelvic bones and they are not far enough apart to have started laying. I will try and get a picture of her tomorrow.

Hawks Migrate at this time ...They normally eat the body there and dont carry it away ..like Eagles do .
I would say dont let them out if you are not home ...or can you tie the dog near the coop ?
Mean roosters chase away attack Predators ...Nice Roosters warn them and help them hide
Roosters get mixed signals from kids ..as kids act scared of them .
Smart Roosters learn from discipline...I had a Young Rooster attack me ..a ninja Kick to him Smartened him up ..
He didnt try again ...A rooster needs to know who his boss is ..if not he makes himself boss
