Australorps breed Thread

I tried to take pics for you but i only have a crappy cell with a 3mp camera and they didn't want to cooperate, so bear with me.

The one in the food dish is a cockerel. You can still see a bit of fuzz on the shoulder and the length of the tail.

Of the ones on the 2x4, the one in the back facing away from me is a pullet. You can see her longer tail here.

I'm sure others have much better pics than me. Someday I'm gonna have a better camera...

Hello all, I had a hatchery recommend a Black Australop for my new, small (2-3 birds) backyard flock, as he said they were the best egg producers. Up to now I was considering White Leghorns, Road Island Reds, Plymouth Rocks, and the Black and Red Sex Link birds. Egg production is a priority for me, as well as easy keeping, because I'm new at this.

Now I'm curious about the Australops, and am wondering if they are heat tolerant? I live in the Central Valley, CA, and it can get triple digits for a few weeks at a time in the summer... TIA!

L2fly,
Even though I am a BA breeder, if you are just looking for egg production then nothing beats a good Leghorn Line period. Sex links are good producers for about 2 years then they taper off. BA's are just all around good birds for many reasons other than eggs compared to a Leghorn.

I have Australorps. They can stand the heat that we have over here in the desert. Just provide good ventilation in the coop, shade for the run, and plenty of fresh cool water. I run a misting system on a timer at the far end of the run for when the temps start getting over 100F.

Hello all!I just found this thread :)
I have a Wonderful little Black Austrolorp of myself. Her name is Blackie.Very orginal I know :lau her name was supposed to be Raven, Violet or Shadow, but now I have a SLW named Raven.
I HOPE I MIGHT add another BA or two in the fall or this summer, but I'm not totally sure.
I'll get a good picture of her tomarrow, currently I don't have any recent of her.(I'll get it on my mom's camera and use my dad's computer to upload it, as my IPad takes awful pics)

Welcome! I think most of us have one called blackie. It's working out which one it is that's the tricky bit

I have a flock of nine birds(several mixed breeds) one being an Australorp. She is still under a year old and started laying first. Very consistent. She is probably the quietest bird (in regards to being talkative) in the flock besides my Marans. She is also friendly. I think her egg is the best formed and prettiest brown egg of all my brown egg layers. When I need to switch to less variety of breeds in the future, Australorp will be #1, #2 would be my Plymouth Rocks #3 Marans. Hope this helps. This is my very first experience with raising chickens & I'm really enjoying it. This site is the best, with lots of helpful, friendly advice

Chicken math!!

Thanks for the thoughts! I've got a nice list now to pick from, hopefully my local feed store will have a nice variety, so I can get three different breeds to try! I'm thinking quiet would be good, as I'm in a neighborhood...

Hi BlueBaby!

I'm still considering what ground cover to put on my coop's dirt floor, and I read that sand is nice because they can dig cool spots in it during summer heat, and you can wet it to make it even cooler... any thoughts about that? I'm not sure I'll be able to set up a misting system... although now that the drought is over, maybe! TIA!
