Australorps breed Thread

Aveca, that is really a sad story of your friend who died but I'm sure that you made his last days a lot happier by helping him get around, enjoying the chickens and friends who like chickens.

Took a couple of pics of my Aussie chicks growing out. Somewhere near 5 month old. In a pen with some Orps.

Not too sure how well this girl will do at the up coming APA Show here in Lebanon IN on Oct 20th.
I like her but will the judge is another story.

you know knobbyoaks, he was walking around the showgrounds with O2 tank, a pict line and a smile as big as the whole state..every time i looked at he was just beaming ear to ear with that big smile..he didnt look well....we knew he wasnt feeing good but never dreamed that would happen..he came every week with chicken stuff for me and stories to the hospital...he was laughing in histerics at the chicken bingo table..so we sure are glad we could make his day..missed him a lot this year..lot of people asking about him..they were shocked and sad..it has been one of those strange years all the way around...

So glad I found this thread. I'm going to post to read later.

I got my first ever chicks this past Wednesday, 8 Australorps, and I continue to be obsessed with them.

Congratulations ! Welcome. Looking forward to seeing your birds......This is my first time raising Australorps......Mine are around 15 weeks now, so far all is well, and the purple and blueish sheen in their feathers are much nicer than expected........I'm coming to appreciate how beautiful the breed is.

I finally got in touch with Duane Urch. I didn't expect him to pick up so I sounded like a complete idiot.

Anyway, I found out his chicks cost $7 apiece.
Can anyone tell me what a 'normal' price for Australorp from a breeder is?

If you check out what folks are selling UK Orp line eggs for you would be happy to pay $7 a chick. I seen a guy selling eggs for $100 a dozen for unproven, and it turned out to be infertile UK Orp eggs. OUCH!!!

There is no "normal" price for chicks, but $7 each from Urch sounds very reasonable to me.

I get $5 for mine, and I raise decent birds, but do not show. I would not mind paying $7 for the quality of chicks Urch breeds. Sounds very reasonable to me too. You could order eggs for $25 add shipping $15, get maybe a 50% hatch and you have 6 chicks for $40 = $6.666 per chick......stan

the quality you would get would be worth it.....i think thats a good price..especially from a good breeder...the thing about getting hatchery birds to blend in is you get a few that are Ok ...but most have 21 comb points..too narrow behind, pinched tails, backward facing eyes.squirrl tails ..a host of all things wrong to work with..even if you find the decent ones in that group with 4 or 6 comb points ect , the chicks still come out with 21 comb points..and fishtails.ect....the better birds lay better eggs, less spotty, bigger, longer lived ect....so when you hear them talking about SOP birds..my experience is , as i have had , and still have both...go for the breeder birds that are closer to SOP..its a lesson in why they use this standard , because the birds that fall into those parameters are just better in every way, egg laying and meat, as well as better looking birds.....the only downfall is you cant order just pullets..you have to sort that out over time..
