Australorps breed Thread

Hi, I'm pretty new to BYC and very new to this thread - just found it this morning. I have two seven month-olds: one RIR who's been laying almost every day for one month already, and one BA who has yet to start laying. Is that normal? They both get the same nutrition, but the BA does seem to be less mature than the RIR in terms of comb/wattles.

Anyway, my BA is named Chocky, and she has personality to spare. She comes running up to me every time I go outside and follows me around "talking" as I do my chores. I love my conversations with her!

Here's a photo that's about a month old:

Happy Holidays!

She is STUNNING! I have yet to own one - or be owned by one - so i cannot speak to their first laying age - Thanks for sharing the picture!

HI everyone, hope that you have a joyful Christmas, for those who celebrate...

Thought I'd give an update on my four chicks, which hatched on November 8th or so... so 7 weeks old. They continue to feather in, one slightly faster than the others, with back feathers coming through - the others all have bare backs still. All are starting to develop combs, and some redness in the face... I think we have four little boys, which is a pity as I can't keep roosters. However, I'll wait for a few more months to be sure before we look to sell them on. They are extremely friendly little birds, who will happily come and sit on my lap when treats are on offer (much to their mama's horror - she gets very upset about this!!). Surprisingly, the big Barnevelders to not hassle the chicks, even when the chicks steal their food! Maybe they realise that the 'lorps will eventually be bigger than them. Anyway, here are some recent pics, hope that you enjoy them.

Sam, don't fret sexing them yet. I had a pair of BAs I thought were both cockerels - big bright combs, spur buds...very little difference. Turns out one was a hen. To this day I confuse myself staring at her neck hackles, which are much pointier than on my other hens. What does it matter about looks if eggs come out the back end!

Rachel'sFlock :

aveca, I have a BA hen named Mathilda, as well!
She was my first to have a big, red comb and wattles and my last to lay! just never know what Mother Nature has in mind!

Hee hee, I know, I have one hen I wasnt too sure about for a while such a big comb, shes a pet quality and great egg layer but I thought for a bit that might be a cockeral..Dont have any pics of her , shes just one of our free roamers that keep the neighborhood in eggs.

How much do your lorps weigh? My girls are about 10# and 8#. They're huge! I thought they might be Jerseys, but their feet are white and pink. I'm thinking of buying some eggs for the bator.

One from today. She wouldn't stay still for the camera so this is all I could get. She's very friendly and very heavy compared to my other girls. I've never weighed her but she's heavy enough she can't jump a small fence. So, she's actually never had her wings clipped. She is the flock leader and occasionally throws her weight around when smackdown is needed. Generally she's a very peaceful and friendly matriarch. I also feel that's she's special because she was the lone survivor of a horrible dog attack AND became a "teenage mom" when her younger flock mates arrived. She was very kind and nurturing to the chicks. I guess they still look up to her. She has so much respect in the flock that the only hen that will not squat for me will squat for her

..... When it happens our Australorp just turns on the squatting hen and gives her a peck in the head....like "What on Earth are you doing.....do I look like a rooster?.... *peck* *peck* get it together!".
