Australorps breed Thread

Who here has had problems with a very noisy Australorp? I want this breed, but I live in a suburban neighborhood where noisy chickens wouldn't be appreciated...

My four are usually quiet, except when they lay an egg! All of them are quiet during the night.

My Golden Comet is pretty loud. The Heritage RIRs are very quite too.

Stay away from the Mediterranean breeds and Leghorns can be noisy.

Mine aren't particularly noisy. Echo chats some, Zorra is pretty much always quiet as are the EEs. The Partridge Chanteclers sort of trill softly rather than squawk.

The loud ones are the Faverolles (I think Clemence talks just to hear herself talk), Anconas and Cubalayas.

And I'd rather listen to any of them than a dog that barks at everything.

I don't know what Heritage RIR's are, but my 2 RIR's have super loud egg songs. Our leghorn is a little quieter.
How loud of an egg song is it for Aussies?

I only have the one Australorp and she is quiet. Doesn't even do an egg song. She does talk to me some but it's not loud.

She also looks at me like that when she wants a treat. She's as bad as the dogs with the begging. lol. She grabed my grilled cheese sandwich out of my hands one day. :p

And I don't know who it was but the other day I had 3 chickens in the coop and one was purring! Have not heard it since.

I agree! Australorps are very smart!

I have read articles that call them stealth chickens. One person said she had hers for a couple of year when a neighbor peeked over the fence and said you have chickens? I have never heard them!

They are a great choice for a city chicken.
