Australorps breed Thread

Hi cubakid, He's a ten month old bird. The person shot the photo standing above the bird. If it had been ground level, he wouldn't look quite as squatty.

My 2 cents, I like the first one a lot better. In the bottom pic, I think you get a better idea of his natural look. The top pic, he is pulled away from the hand that is keeping him posed. I too would like to see a longer neck, but he is a good bird in my opinion. Alittle more filling out, he'll be real nice........stan

GREAT! Could use his weight up higher away from the ground, a little more tail to him, and a little longer neck, but as good as any from what I see in these pictures.
Do you show?
What line/breeder is this bird?
I'd like to see more pictures of him and of any females if you have any.

I agree with cubakid.. He could hold his wing just a little tighter..over all nice bird..I wouldn't throw that one away..I think if you look for hens to fix those minor issues.

Super nice face and comb..his chest is a little ahead of his beak, very good points...

Hi from Australia, Dan. Really like that first roo. He has a very good head in particular. Unless his other side is different, I can't see a single fault from your good closeup shot. I've not seen a better BA head on here. Interesting and informed comments from folk on here. Not disagreeing with anyone, as you can only call it from the given pics.eg. in pic 1, his beak is way behind his breast. He's in what I call 'resting pose', when they kind of pull their heads in and and look rather short-curved in the back. I'd basically ignore this pic when making conformation judgements. In pic 3, his beak is in front of his breast as he's in a kind of 'reaching' pose, so he looks a bit cutaway in the breast. I reckon we'd need more pics to know where the 'true beak lies'! With the right girls, you could breed some very good birds from him, though, of course, it's not that simple and often 2 good birds just don't 'click' and produce rubbish.
Cheers Geoff from Aus

Excellent commentary, Geoff...constructive, to the point, and informative. I thank you very much for taking the time to reply. I'm not expecting to breed a champion first thing. The real pleasure and satisfaction is in the journey, while striving for improvement, conformity, consistency...all very tough to attain in a line of fowl. I will enjoy every minute of it. Thanks again.

I should have explained to folks that in pic #1 the roo is being somewhat held in one hand and does not have his feet firmly planted on a surface. That's why he is in that squatty position, and his wing is low because his is attempting to balance himself.

Hi Everyone. I ran across this at Stromberg's today. Since not everyone has access to "show quality" chicks I am wondering if this may be a step up from the typical hatchery BA chicks for those that would like to show for 4H or maybe for small breeding programs? They do say in the write up that these BA's may not lay eggs as well as their other BA's as they are bred for show. I wonder what criteria they use for their breeding for show program? Anyway, found it interesting so thought I'd post it here in case anyone else may want to explore it further or comment, etc. All my best to everyone.
