Australorps breed Thread

Well I finally got a chance to take some pics of MICK and his girls. I know what I don't like about him so hit me with you best shot!

He is only 8 or 9 months old, I have to check my book.

Here is a poster for you old timing guys from 1918

Clearly something that needs to be sent to all municipalities, especially those that have ordinances against chickens

Only big thing I see is he needs a little more tail, not angle but lower feathering in the tail. He will probably get more with age, as well as a little more size and body. Good legs and back but needs that width in the back and maybe a little more width side to side in the tail. Nice bird

Okay Rattler, here ya go. What I like best about Mick is that he lives nearby and I can see him anytime I want! That is until his owner gets tired of me and locks the gate!

Hey Cindy. I know you don't really need the opinion of a novice but I just wanted to tell you that Melbourne looks great anyway.

Nicer curves and tail, overall better than most I've been seeing around here. You must be feeling pretty proud of him.

Thank you. I feel lucky, more than proud.

I decided not to show this year. He would have to go into isolation if he went to the show, and I want to breed him.

The problem that stands out to me the most is the tail angle and width . Mick and the girls have tails over 40 degrees and they appear pinched in the photos. Mick needs more width, and more of a chest, but that may improve as he gets older. I would also work to get a wider stance in the legs, but that might come as you work on the overall width of the birds.

Kurt, critics are everywhere so I guess one more won't bother you! Mick is a young pup and will turn out just fine. You know his lineage, he's carrying the good stuff. The hard molt hit you at a wierd time this year and I still see signs of it in your flock. Mick will carry the ball for you, that's for sure. A lot of breeders would not turn him out of their pens if he was theirs. I don't know how people do it...I can't see enough in the photos to make any definitive comments, but I know you cull hard so I would bet he's a dandy when viewed in the flesh.

I think he is a keeper for sure, Has the Australorp look. No doubt about his breeding. As Dan said, it's hard to comment on a picture, but that is what you ask, so here goes. I like his top line curve, other than what appears to be a flat spot just down from the comb. That may be due to his pose. I think his pose may have his head a little far forward? He should grow more tail, he needs that, and some more filling out. I assume he is young. In the pic with the hen, she is almost a large as he is. His comb is a mess, but I wish my boys was that good!. It's nothing to be concerned with really, considering the good points he has. Nice tight feathering and pretty good balance for a young bird. Mine do a lot of maturing in the last months of their first year, and I expect this guy will too. He would be a keeper in most any flock, good bird.....stan
