Australorps breed Thread

I'm getting an aurstrolorp in April. So what can y'all tell me about them?

The are smart and good foragers. Mine are quiet and friendly but do not demand attention. They do not run from me but they do not jump up on my shoulder. They are very healthy and do well in the heat. They still laid eggs in the 100 plus heat and did not start panting as quickly as the EEs or the Marans.

They did molt fairly hard but recovered nicely. They are one of my two favorite breeds.

The hen on the left is Sienna. The one on the right is Kinra

Ron, what's that pattern on Sienna, a mottle or splash or just the way the light is bouncing off her feathers? I'm a rank novice at this, if they aren't black I'm lost LOL.

From what I have been told, you will not get an Ameraucana from a hatchery, you will get an EE, check the Ameraucana thread. The Dels will not be very good quality at all, and the silver laced Wyandotts I have seen from them will not look like the pictures you see. I don't know what you will get in the other breeds, except the Australorps. The hatchery Aussies that I have seen are the best of the hatchery breeds. I would get more of them and cut back on some of the others. Just My Humble Opinion....stan

I'm fine with getting EEs. I've heard good reviews from all the breeds. I'm just trying to diversify my flock.

I least recommend most of them because I don't have any and have no personal experience with them

Mine came from Ideal and I would definitely recommend the Black Australorps. Very nice birds, with the EEs they are the best layers I have. Averaged, the 4 of them are laying 5 eggs a week each. At least so far. We'll see what everyone does as the daylight gets longer.

There is no "Americana" breed and MM is NOT selling Araucana. A true Araucana would never lay an olive egg. And Araucana's are rumpless, you can't mistake a rumped bird (as most chickens are) for an Araucana. I really don't know how they can use the name of a real breed when what they are selling Easter Eggers: Ameraucana crosses. And there is NOTHING wrong with an EE. I have 2, they are great birds. One lays blue to blue green. The other olivey green to green-blue (depends on where they are in the "laid so many days, took one or two off" cycle.

Since I don't know all the breeds, and since your profile says you live where it is both very cold and very hot, I'd check the comb size. My BAs are fine but my Anconas have HUGE combs that flop over and they are getting some slight cold damage.

The SLW and SPS are in my "maybe if I get more chickens" list. Along with a lot of others not on your list

I wish they had better descriptions of the breeds, I'd have a hard time ordering not knowing cold heartiness, heat tolerance, egg laying quantities. They don't even have photos of adult birds.

Well I can put petroleum jelly on their combs if it gets too cold.

Yes, but better to not have the issue to start with if you have a choice and know to think ahead about such things (which I did not). Unless you REALLY want that bird with a huge comb, think twice. I understand Vaseline/Bag Balm, etc can HELP but only to a point so it depends on how cold your area gets.
