G'day from Australia,
One of my grandkids found this forum so we thought we would join it. I'm just getting over a major heart attack and open heart surgery, so this is great therapy for me.

I have been breeding & exhibiting Australorps (& other fowls) since I was a young boy, and for over 50 years. Over the years I have had many breeds and for the past 15 years I have been actively judging. I have judged all over Australia so I am very involved in poultry in general.

I've been to the USA many times and visited quite a few of your shows, but as I always say, you are never too young to learn, so I can hopefully pick up a few ideas from your forum.

There is a very strong and active Australorp Club here www.australorps.com and I am lucky enough one of their three the Life Members.

I have only one Black Australorp who is making this crazy lady even crazier. She
was singing up quite an egg song on Sunday and so far not one flippin egg

.
I continue to check daily with no success. I guess she is just trying out for the
choir. My other two are no where near ready. Still love my BA - she is the friendliest.

Welcome Ross,
I've been feeling a bit lonely on here as the only Aussie constant. I look forward to learning from your vast experience. I must confess to misgivings about the Australian Club. Would join, but I find the 'comments' on the official website regarding the latest SOP, illogical and offensive to those responsible for updating our Standard. It seems to me that they protected the breed from the 'bigger is better' faddists who seem consumed with the 'glittering prizes'. Even old Ray, for whom I have great respect, gives contrary messages re this in his book. Sorry to dump this on you, Ross. Nothing personal, but I'm not the only one who thinks the Aussie Club lacks respect for the heritage of the breed and won't be satisfied until they've turned it back into a fluffy Orp. Not much of a welcome, mate, and I'm not usually so intense!

I'm not quite sure what you mean by the Australorp Club being illogical and offensive the the Australian Poultry Standards Committee.
The only thing that they seemed to misinterpret was the actual true weights of the fowl. Have you ever actually weighed any of the fowls? They added the recommendations for the change in the description of the beak colour, which was needed. They also added the standards for the White Australorp, which was pleasing.

Sorry, but I am really lost on your comment on "Nothing personal, but I'm not the only one who thinks the Aussie Club lacks respect for the heritage of the breed and won't be satisfied until they've turned it back into a fluffy Orp." That is absolute crap!

I have no idea why you would feel that way, as we, and other serious breeders, are always concerned that not enough breeders are breeding fowls that are NOT tight enough on the feather and show too much under-down of the Australorp.

I've only had them for 35 plus years, so in your eyes I must be inexperienced. I've won the Australian Australorp Titles, the bantam section of Poultry Canberra, and Champion at Sydney Royal and many Bird of Show awards. None of my fowls or Ray Connor's line could be considered "fluffy".

Perhaps I chose the wrong forum, or Geoff you're really a true expert on our breed. By the way, are you aware of the history of that cockerel you use in your picture? Do you know his breeding make-up?

Was afraid you'd take it the wrong way, and please don't blame the fine American folk on here for my comments. That would be completely unfair as these are my personal views only. As to the wonderful cockerel in my atavar, I made very clear on here that I was using it as an example of the best boy I've seen. I clearly acknowledged its breeder and Andy as photographer. I have never claimed to be an expert, merely sharing my BA journey with the fine folk on here. I would hate to think you would deprive them of your great knowledge and experience just because I may disagree with some Australian club policy.I'm quite happy to discuss the issue with you by PM, but I don't wish to spoil your time on here.
