Australorps breed Thread

Dan,
That question is a double edged sword. It all depends on what the future brings. Sometimes I leave two cockerels that grew up together with aunts, mothers and grandmoms then they don't fight if I want to line breed. Sometimes I separate the cockerels from their sisters at 16 weeks because their hormones start acting up and I do not want breed brothers and sisters. Then the boys stay together and usually get along. Sometimes I breed with the 3 pen matriarcal clan mating with different cocks. If they all get along then fine, but you will eventually have to separate to breed your different blood lines. Does any of this help?

I snapped a couple of pictures of my Hupp Australorps last night. They are really getting to be big!

The Black Rooster in this picture has a better comb and the face is already getting Red. I will probably keep him along with the Blue Cockerel for breeding.

Ron, They are Looking Good! How old are they? I can barely keep track of my own.

Kurt, I was more or less wanting to reduce tension by separating the pullets from the roos at this stage. They just turned 12 weeks old so I will probably Git-R-Done in the next week. It was a Cock A Doodle Doo athon this morning. I have about 19 roos and they are all starting to feel their oats!

I always have to look it up too. I want to say 16 weeks old but will look it up when I get home.

I separated the Cockerels from the Pullets last night. The Cockerels were looking ready to start pestering the Pullets and the pullets are not "ready" to be pestered....

Yep,
Got the same problem. The Hupp 5 are 15 weeks old and are in their own coop and dog kennel. The problem is that there is a splash pullet, a blue pullet and 3 cockerels, 1 splash and 2 blues.
I am going to sell one of the blue cockerels as soon as I can figure out which one I like better. Anybody close by that wants a very, very rare Blue Australorp cockerel?
I broke my cardinal rule of not hatching in the summer, usually I break up breeding pens by April. But, guess what, hatch due Thurs or Fri. I sold so many birds this year that I cut myself short on good pullets.
