QUESTION F O R THE AUSSIE GURUS PLEASE
old.gif

my little girl will be 20 weeks old within a week or so. The days are already getting short (tho I do add a little extended "daylight" to the coop) and it's already getting cold. So, do you think she might start to l a y yet or will she wait for spring? Do Aussies lay through the winter? I know there are some breeds that do.

It is a race this time of year--She may start at 25 weeks old but she could hold out until Spring at her age.

The shorter days usually makes them take a bit longer but they usually still start laying before spring.

hoping you get an egg this year!

oh me to on hoping you get an egg this year AND me to with my 7 Aussie girls. The rir's are laying now, or at least a couple of them are and the other 6 haven't started yet. Sure is fun getting eggs even if it's not but one every day or 2 every other day.
Mine and yours are about the same age to.

My roost is on the side too--same thought about them covering their feet in winter. I'm glad they are so hearty, I'm already feeling the pangs of leaving them out in the cold. Everyone assures me that BA are fine in the cold so *I'm* the one who will have to be strong! lol!
lol you sound like me History, same here and I'm in the south where we hardly ever get snow. I was wanting to cover the front gate and the rest of the north side in some plastic to be sure they stayed warm. :) I am planning on covering the rest of that north side though just to cut the wind off them at night.

Actually I'm hoping I have at least one little girl Aussie and probably a roo and not that the stunted one isn't a late blooming roo as well :fl guess I won't know for certain till somebody crows and/or somebody lays.

I am getting eggs from my year old "mutt" and 3 sex-links that were hatched April 1st that started laying in September. One of them started out laying huge eggs then ran into problems and stopped laying a week ago. She's otherwise fine so I'm hoping she will start again eventually.

Checked and my aussies will be 20 weeks on Tuesday so hopefully there is time yet for us both before the days get too short.

We are getting down into the high 20's tonight are supposed to have a chance for our first snow by the end of the week. :th

Pullets that start laying in the Fall will usually keep laying eggs through the first winter.

I hope you have two pullets!

oh yeah you'll be able to tell before laying or crowing. Mine wasn't crowing when everyone helped me with the sex of mine. Mine still aren't laying but I know they're females. Aussies are just hard to judge for me!
oh dear good luck on that snow! :(
