Australorps breed Thread

lol I had to grin at you guys saying don't mess up their routine because you're so right. I put a cloth doubled over mines door when the temps dropped to 20 at night time and they would NOT go in that door or even go near it. ARG
I did manage to get the most eggs today I have gotten yet though. 9 eggs and got 15 hens. 2-3 more of the Aussies are laying now. Not sure but I think they are all laying now but if I am wrong there is only 1 not laying by the way she is acting. She's very standoffish and heads to the bushes if she thinks I am even coming her direction. The others have chilled out a little about that but still don't want me touching them.

Mine are starting up too! Three of the five for sure now.

Congratulations!

congratulations on eggs. How old are the pullets?
Thank you!

RIR's, Nov. 27th will be 7 months old and Aussies Dec. 9th will be 7 months old.

Well I went in the coop today to check out the diggs and I really like it in there. Now that the coop is completely covered, the gals are more calm. They were getting kinda flighty with that cat around. Now they just hang out and do their thing. They are still standoffish and really dont like to be petted but I think that has more to do with Helen my barred rock who doesn't care to be petted either. She sets the tone of what is acceptable and what isn't. Although the aussie girls are twice her size, she keeps them in line.

I found a breeder close to me and was going to get a couple more aussies but I am thinking of getting some dorking eggs to hatch and try out that breed. Anyone ever have dorkings?

My two aussies were really friendly when they were younger. Now that they gotten older, they are more aloof instead of being all lovey. I will say though that when they are out with my son who is 18 and his friends, it's really funny to see them hang around like pet dogs.

Dorkings are great! They get along well with australorps too. Dorkings Usually lay a white to cream colored Med to large egg. They are good foragers so the eggs are very tasty too.

Do you know of anyone who has them to ship? I have found a couple of people but havent heard anything back. I would even be willing to drive to the LA area (Im in Vegas) if someone had them but wouldnt ship. Price would need to be reasonable since the gas would run me about $100.00 to drive there.

Duane Urch ships them but has a 25 chick minimum. Dick Horstman will ship 12 if you pay for a heat pack. There used to be a person in Southern CA with Dorkings--they were all mixed up though--Red, white and Silver all in the same breeding pen.

This is last years list from Urch\Turnland poultry:
