I gave my chickens a Pumpkin!

In this one, The BA's are waiting for the Golden Comets to get some seeds out.

merry meet all,

here is my Gloria, I do believe she is an Australorp, she has a small black comb and small wattles.

she was hatched the middle of April, she was always the smallest ( i had brought 6 she is the only one I have left) Gloria has had all kinds of problems besides being half the size of her hatchmates. but then at 12 weeks she popped her hip out of place and took 6 weeks to heal in a confined cage. she was given a black Ameraucauna pullet that was 12 weeks old who became fast friends. and are the same size. even though Gloria is so much older.. wondering will she still lay? maybe just smaller eggs?

just wondering.. and learning

Is there any good way to tell the difference between a Black Australorp, Black Jersey Giant and Black Orpington? Thanks for the help.

Ok, I will take a stab at this. Jersey Giants have yellow feet and will be much larger, like twice as big. Orpingtons are wider and not as "athletic". One source says they can be penned in with an 18 inch fence! There is also a difference in the number of points on the comb, but you will have to look that up.

If you look at the Australorp, It will be more Curvy too.

Do you have one you are trying to identify? If so, post some pictures here. Try to get a side shot, a bottom of the foot shot and a close up of the face from the side. You can also check out the Breed identification thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=15

Another
point is that BA's often mature slowly and sometimes won't have all of the Adult look to them for a year or so.

Thanks for checking in here!

no problem..and yum yum on that pumpkin!! they look like they are having a blast with it.

here are a few pictures from the twin tiers show
mr softie the orpinton cockeral is bottom right ,that might answer the differences that somone asked about size and bulk i think would be the main difference but blk orps are the foundation of australorps., he had just been placed on champion row, the hen above him is bob whitneys australorp hen, she was grand champion english..she is a top bird and near perfect in person.
i ran over an took a pic while they were collecting up the other birds..if you get poultry press the full story i think is in either sept or octs issue..i havnt gotten it yet so not sure.

Thanks for the info Ron. I have 4 "BA's" or so I thought. Now I am thinking 2 BAs and 2 Jersey Giants. They are 17 weeks old so the JG are not that much bigger yet but, they have yellow feet and yellow skin, so I am pretty sure. The other two look more curvy like you said. I will put some pics up soon. Thanks again.

They could still be BA's. The feet can turn grey and the yellow skin might mean they are crossed with something else. They are Hatchery Chickens? If they are Jersey Giants, you will know when they are older, by both the size and egg laying rate (JG's will lay less eggs).

Bye,

Ron
