Australorps breed Thread

Ron, it does help! I was going for the dependable egg laying of the RIR, but I want docile chickens, I was attacked by a rooster when I was young & it tore up my back. My grandmother cooked it the next day. But I do not have any white chickens because of it. I have 14 hens that are 2 1/2 yrs old, my egg production was way down. My DH had to put down a roo due to injury, and he put down the roo who caused the injuries. I have one roo left, and there is peace among my flock. Guess what? I got 12 eggs today! I guess maybe the roos were eating some of my eggs, or else the hens are happier? I think I will go with the BA! thanks, theresa

Your Welcome!

Yes, stress does slow down the chickens. Heat does too and of course 2 1/2 yrs old chickens are getting into old age I guess. It is a great plan to start adding new chickens to the mix. Mine are babies, but I will begin adding some next spring. Of course I keep hearing about chicken math on this board...

Bye,

Ron

is this a bantam black australorp? i really need a more side view to examine the amount of point on the comb. he looks to be a cockerrel, is he?
also i need to see his feet both top and bottoms. pull back his hackle feathers and tell me what color skin he has, we are looking for white, any yellow is a crossbreed.

He is standard size and pretty huge! (To me anyway, lol) Ill have to get new pics. Here is one more to show his size. He is a roo now. Have to look up his age in records, since they mature much slower than Serama, I cant guess his age from the pics. Ill be back with new pics soon then! Thanks!

thanks for the side pic. i would like to see him at his current age at a pose with a tape measure or yardstick to show the height and length and width. the width would be bettermeasured looking down across the back and shoulders. have you ever competed in 4-H showmanship or open class showmanship. a hand measurement is used there, if you have done this, please also take a pic of that. it will determine the health and condition of your bird.
as you can imagine all aspects of the chickens features determine the quality of your bird. i can see he is a cockerrel in these pics, how long ago were they taken. yes the australorps are not fast maturing breeds which is a good thing. it gives them time to grow good bone and muscle mass as long as your feed and nutrients are not induced with growth hormones like they are using in meat production feeds.

thanks!

i thought that is what i had also "sun bleaching" it isnt. we have to breed in more blacks back into the blues to get that brassiness out. i started out with breeding a splash orp hen to my black male, got the blues 50/50 bred again and got less brassiness but used the father over the daughter. not what i was wanting but had no fresh blacks to use so im now going to breed a splash orp cock over one of my blue hens and my 50/50 blue cock over my best black hen.
i see you raise australorps, can i ask how long youve been raising and breeding them and what is the origin, hatcher or breeder?
im looking for someone who would be willing to swap quality blacks for some quality blacks and blues. im needing a new bloodline to introduce to my flock so as to breed back the qualities of the black australorp body style and plumage.

i look forward to your reply
thankyou

The size of any of these three birds would be about right... all of us are highschoolers aswell. 8.5 lbs is for cockbirds.

hey cuba, which one are you? this rooster is over 8 lbs, what do y'all think?
