Australorps breed Thread

Ah-HA!! I think you've hit on the very problem I'm experiencing! I'm using regular light bulbs, not the preferred red ones....I'm heading to the feed store as we speak! Thank you SO MUCH!!

Your Welcome!

The red bulb helps a lot too.

Quote: This is normal with more room ..they are just more frisky ...like most kids they have so much energy they dont know what to do with it .
Mine do this they are 4 weeks every once in a while ...jump & fly & all run one way then all run the other way ...
Sometimes they do it when I am in their with them... They get excited...sometimes they run under my feet ...ooppps

Itss also a baby pecking order thing ...as babys they do a mock stink eye 1st before they do a real stink eye ..sizing each other up so to speak

I got the red bulb, but after a couple weeks the light lost most of it's red. I have some chicks that are nearly 3 weeks old. The oldest is the bossiest. I put some chick grit, and a plug of grass with roots and dirt intact, into the brooder. They were afraid of it. It's taking time, but they are venturing nearer to the scarey grass clump. When the oldest "discovers" something, which is after she (hopefully) is sure it's safe, then she becomes a bit of a bully. The other two give her a run for her money though.

Well, I went to the hardware store and found a red "party" bulb...no red heat lamp bulbs to be had in our small town. I changed the light out and INSTANTLY THEY CALMED DOWN ...amazing!!! I've hardly heard a peep out of 'em in the last 2 hours! I want to extend a HUGE thank you to ronott1 for the advice....many many thanks!

You are welcome!

I am happy that it worked for you.

I could be wrong ...but usually EEs have this beard / chipmunk thing going on like this .
Maybe as they grow they will get more beard growth

"usually" being the operative word. Depending on which generation are they are, they could be beardless and have a non-pea comb. I have two EEs with pea comb but no beard, several with straight comb and beard, and some with both, and some with neither.

Yes, because there is no standard for EEs.

They are one of my favorites!

Sometimes aggressive birds are just bored. A few weeks ago Jahdan bought a few Happy Hen Treat Balls. You can put anything inside. Jahdan has used cabbage, kale and even tomatoes. Google it and you will find numerous retailers.
