Yes, molting age. You should be seeing more feathers than usual around the place and maybe a reduction in egg laying.
They will be pretty and glossy soon!
Phew! Thanks for the responses! egg laying is down...and I have found feathers around. Good deal--I can't wait to see how beautiful they are when their new feathers come in. I'll be sure to post pics!

BYC has a molt photo contest each Fall. If they get pretty ratty, save some pictures of them for the contest.
They may not show much though. BAs often glide right through the first molt without looking too ugly. Many times they keep laying eggs too although less. Some breeds will stop laying eggs for 6 weeks when they molt.

Hatchery RIRs aren't usually that dark.
May be the picture... but it looks red to me ..Is it black or red ?
