Australorps breed Thread

Well...This will be my 1st hatch attempt...plus, I couldn't decide on breeds...just so many good ones! So I ordered 2 each of the Australorps, Buff Orpington, Speckled Sussex, Rhode Island Reds, & Barred Rocks, + 4 Easter Eggers & 1 assorted Bantam...My poor DH is feeling like I've gone cuckoo for chickens!

It's ok!

Tell him to not count the chickens until the eggs hatch.....Shipped eggs can be very disappointing.

apparently, ingestion of Styrofoam leads to the body converting it into estrogen, so people used to feed it to their layers to boost egg production/maturity.

There are much better ways to give them more estrogen. Try cabbage or broccoli instead. I wouldn't intentionally feed mine styrofoam. Too many chemicals.

I just don't understand it, ever since they were chicks, they've been drawn to it. I can't explain it.

Maybe because it's white? Mine will go after anything white. They once tried to steal gauze pads from the vet because they thought they were bread.

I found one of my hens dead this weekend and I am puzzled. I wondered if anyone out there could tell me the best fodder and the best feed for my hens. They are pets as well as layers and i don't want this to happen again. Also, I just got 3 red sex links. Do they tend to bully the aussies or do they get along?
