Australorps breed Thread

Well I can officially call myself a member now :) Meet our newest addition a 3 day old purebred Aussie Splash Australorp. I want to call it peep but the kids are complaining about that bitterly LOL

a huge X2!  gorgeous!  you must keep us up on it's progress.  Any sign of another hatch?

No afraid its going to be an only child. It hatched from eggs I had shipped from the other side of the country so between that and our inexperience we only had the one finally hatch on day 24. Checked the rest the next day but they all looked pretty ick.

I lost my 16 week old Australorp chick and my Australorp cross, chick today

The Australorp cross became sick about a week ago, she was gasping and coughing constantly... took her to the vet, but the vet wasn't sure what it was, so she gave me some antibiotics to see if that would fix the problem. A couple of days later my pure Australorp became wobbly on her feet... I didn't take her to the vet, i just waited it out and gave her vegemite water as a vitamin boost to see if it would help.

They both got worse and worse... The pure Australorp seemed to be displaying the typical leg paralysis you see with Mareks disease (one leg forward, one back)

I don't know heaps about Mareks disease, but I just hope that if it was Mareks disease, it hasn't infected my whole flock!!! My Australorp cross continued to gasp for air, showing no signs of improvement, and also started to become wobbly on her feet, struggling to walk around and falling over very regularly...
They were both vaccinated for Mareks disease at 1 day old.. same as my other two chicks.

Today I decided that they had suffered enough and considering they were showing no signs of improvement, I had them put down.

Now I just hope my other two chicks who were living with them before they showed signs of illness, don't get sick too!!

So that makes a total of 4 out of 4 Australorp chicks that have gone wrong for me... 3 died and 1 ended up a rooster... I think I'm gonna steer clear from chicks for a while.... Perhaps buy some POL pullets.

this is my 1/2 aussie / white rock Marker

this is a few days ago ...his black feathers are starting to cascade like a necklace around his neck ..I will try to get a better pic tomorrow

I am so sorry to hear about the loss.

Mareks is a tough one to vaccinate for. Most sources say that the vaccine is not very effective because the virus mutates quickly. It may have been something else though. Here in California, we can send them in for necropsy for free. It is very helpful to know what killed them.
