Speaking of hatchery Australorps....

MM used to be the hatchery of choice for people around my area and there is a very large bunch of people who keep chickens in WV. The major problem that I've heard a LOT about and have seen a couple examples of are birds with twisted beaks and many with leg problems, especially in RIR and Australorps.
I recommend Cackle and have done for some time. Several folks have taken my advice on BYC and I haven't heard any complaints as of yet.
I have had problems with egg breaking off and on. It is often an egg hardness issue but it seems like it can be seasonal, or hormonal. Make sure that she is getting calcium free choice and some vitamins with A, D and phosphorous in it. They often stop after a month or so and is not permanent.
Make sure that there are no parasites too.
I bought a roll out nest box from premier because eggs were being broken in the nest box. The eggs are not round enough to roll though....but now broken eggs since I installed the new nest box!
Yes yes!!
I think out of the Christmas chicks I have four confirmed roosters... The combs and cock fighting amongst them tells me my worst fears. However, I'll have plenty of back up roosters and roosters for the bachelor pad when I'm picking out a breeder. Wahoo!
Hopefully one of these boys gets pretty close to the sop...
Quote: It also may be a lack of protein Is she at the bottom of the pecking order ? she may not be getting enough .
All Mine will eat any broken egg .
I would keep her separate ...so others dont pick it up ...if she can not be broken of it .
