Speaking of hatchery Australorps....

I just found out one of my pullets is EATING her eggs. UGH. I stuck her in with a boyfriend to keep him company and see what can be done. :(

I have had problems with egg breaking off and on. It is often an egg hardness issue but it seems like it can be seasonal, or hormonal. Make sure that she is getting calcium free choice and some vitamins with A, D and phosphorous in it. They often stop after a month or so and is not permanent.

Make sure that there are no parasites too.

I bought a roll out nest box from premier because eggs were being broken in the nest box. The eggs are not round enough to roll though....but now broken eggs since I installed the new nest box!

MM used to be the hatchery of choice for people around my area and there is a very large bunch of people who keep chickens in WV.  The major problem that I've heard a LOT about and have seen a couple examples of are birds with twisted beaks and many with leg problems, especially in RIR and Australorps.

I recommend Cackle and have done for some time.  Several folks have taken my advice on BYC and I haven't heard any complaints as of yet.

I too have had the best luck from Cackle than any other hatchery.

I don't have anything to gain from recommending them, either. Just all my preference.

They've got free-choice oyster shell in another hopper and they get 19% protein in the layer feed.

I know it was her, because I saw her go hide to lay the egg, and when I went to gather it, she'd eaten all of the egg and part of the shell.

I'm glad to know it's not permanent. I had assumed my mamas quit laying completely. Now I suspect their eggs were being eaten! Ooooh, I hope this is the only bird that has the habit.

Yes yes!!

I think out of the Christmas chicks I have four confirmed roosters... The combs and cock fighting amongst them tells me my worst fears. However, I'll have plenty of back up roosters and roosters for the bachelor pad when I'm picking out a breeder. Wahoo!

Hopefully one of these boys gets pretty close to the sop...

I look forward to seeing them grow! :)

It is. I don't like making traditional doors. I like slat doors, that I can see through. Plus they're cool looking to me. Each door is unique, all made from scrap panels.
