Australorps breed Thread

Yes, I'm fine with her going broody I put 5 eggs in front if her waited 20 minutes then went out and they were all tucked under her.
I have fertile eggs stored from a few hens I would like to hatch. But I'm not sure she will go through with it. This is by far the longest she has stayed with out moving. However she laid yesterday. After her last egg is when she's full broody if she sits? I'm really not sure what to do cause my other broody is top hen I'm hoping she doesn't bother Oreo .
When she stops laying eggs and she has been sitting for about two weeks is the time to put fertile eggs under her.

You might need to move her if there will be broody competition though. Wait two full weeks to try moving her. Sometimes they become very fixated on that one nest and moving them will break them from being broody.

I am down to two Australorp hens. Well, one hen and one pullet... Not really sure where my other two went. They were there when I left this morning. Not a hair or hide missing, just poofed. I'm praying they show back up, but, since the dogs were in the house today and we left before dawn good chance Coyotes came through. Something raided our bot fly bin, body parts and feathers drug through a brand new hole under the fence.

If the two missing pullets crosed the fence through that hole, and they survive the night, I'll put them up tomorrow. No more ranging birds for a few days...

Did they come back??

k, last time I moved her very early ! That's when she went crazy and broke eggs wouldn't sleep in nesting box ect.. Just a few weeks ago. So two weeks in move her and eggs? My last broody I moved right after hatch but had coop subdivided. It worked well , however we lost the last egg. She tried hard to keep it going but other 9 chicks were ready to party! If I had had incubator I would have put egg in their but I didn't. It was fully developed but rolled around a ton by momma trying to keep up. She was great started laying and still stayed with chicks for 8 weeks. We will see with Oreo , I hope this time she follows through! She seems so much more aggressive then my other. Pepper let me move her around like a rag doll and nvr cackled at me. Now we are good friebds

one more question to all who have had broody Austalorps.
How many eggs can she sit in? She is my biggest hen.
How good of moms are they? I know each hen is different but curious on others experience.
Thank you to all! Greatly appreciated

I've got one of my ladies on a clutch of 11, but I've heard a standard fowl can sit on upwards of 15... Correct me if I'm wrong. She is doing a great job keeping them all nice a toasty.

I out 10 under a smaller broody she did well. Oreo is huge so I won't mess with any bantam eggs or shells that crack easy.

I had one that could fit 17 and raise 15 no problem... She was a mean momma, too.
Ok, you answered my question cause she's kinda scaring me lol.. Much more vocal then my OEG broody ! Maybe I'll shoot for 15 and see what nature decides. I'm doing a study with my incubator on each hen. I want to know who gives pullets. Because last batch ( from a broody was 3 pullets 6 cockerels. But with herim just going to put a mix under her. So I can continue ur my study and have fun with her , that's if she doesn't take a chunk out if my arm

I have not had time to read the whole thread. However I have a question to anyone ...
I have Australorp , she has Danced around going broody 2 x in last month.
Un expected I got home from work and she's in main laying box. Didn't think much of it and collected all the eggs but have 3 golf balls someone moved into the main box she's in.
I went out this morning and she has not moved! I opened box and got yelled at

!!
So my question is do they go broody often? She's from a hatchery . My real broody is a OEG I got from a family. And she loves her chicks!
Funny thing is I have 10 in the incubator and I think my OEG is also starting to test another brood.
I have read so many times that tractor hens don't usually go broody .

My black australorp hen from Murray mcMurray went broody and we let her try to hatch 3 eggs, one wasn't fertile, we got a boy and a girl. She was a great mom, she was separate from the other chickens the whole time.

Before we let her have eggs I had a baby robin that was abandoned she and another broody hen would fight over it, the robin just wanted food. We would put Robin under her and she would sit on her a lot, Robin actually got too hot.

That's good to hear! My top broody was a pleasure! I'll have to ponder how many I'll let her sit on. She's such a pretty hen! Was the sweetest intel she started this on and off broody attempts.
