Australorps breed Thread

There were peafowl at the college I went to in So. Cal. In breeding season the cocks would be on the roofs of the 4 story dorms screaming their lungs out. VERY loud and ANNOYING!

Yep - down here in Florida, they alight upon any nearby rooftop and scream .... I have no love for the critters, but do respect those who keep them responsibly.

That is truly interesting. I love taking a hobby and making it cost effective, or even in this case, covering the entire cost. I used to do this with reptiles as well as aquarium plants - I actually sold aquatic plants on Ebay and did quite well. While I am not interested in selling feathers, or keeping peafowl (doubt I could living in the middle of the city on a tiny spot of land anyway, at least no males) I find it quite interesting.

Both sexes will call. The call most people know them for is rather a locating call or the male's mating call. They have different calls for certain things. Instead of a mating call the hens will producing a series of clucking noise to call her chicks to her. If she doesn't get a response from her chicks then she starts calling and searching. Locating call is just one call then with a pause in between and then another call. The mating call is a series of calls back to back. I need to make videos of their calls.

Imagine a bunch of birds doing that all day!

I would be interested to see what your birds do Jadyn. As you say, there are different calls for different things, just like chickens. "Here is food" is WAY different than "I just laid an egg".

Do the white feathers sell? I would guess most people would be looking for the multicolored ones.

I can do imitate each call. I with my peafowl if you can match the call close enough it will sometimes get them calling. It's kind of fun. White feathers will almost always if not always sell for more than the Indian Blue. For two reasons; first you can die white peacock feathers easier and better than an Indian Blue peacock feather. Another is few people know that White peafowl exist, fewer have seen one in person, and even fewer own one. Yet they are not the rarest nor newest variety.

Interesting! I hadn't thought about the ability to dye. While the typical Blue is beautiful I was expecting the white to be kind of blah. But I found a picture of a male displaying, looked like fireworks. Beautiful.

Do people mostly use them for home decoration or costumes or something?

Home decoration, fly fishing, quills to write with (I've made a few. Writes very nice), earrings, some costumes (including dresses), wreaths, and what ever other crafts you can think of. For those that haven't seen a white male fanning it's gorgeous. These are my whites. Eventually my white will look like this one.

My friend sent me a photo of their white peacock.

Here is my pair of whites. The male is on the right and my hen is on the left.

So my daughter and I are doing dueling Google searches on peafowl facts and find that a peacock, "big" as it is, isn't any heavier than a Jersey Giant. Wow. I would have guessed they would be much more like a decent sized turkey.

Adult males usually weigh 10lbs or more. Peafowl are closer related to pheasants than turkeys though. Have you found out how many varieties of peafowl are recognized by the UPA?
