Australorps breed Thread

Yes, as far as the deer go we do understand that they can jump a typical 6 ft. fence. But when using multiple stands of electric wire, using black fencing (black throws off their depth perception we read somewhere) plus possibly tipping the top inward we are hoping to cause them to think twice because of the poor depth perception. I can't find the article we read before but the link below is a good one from your neck of the woods Bruce.

We have a small apple orchard fenced in with 6' black wire and never in over 10 years have the deer jumped in even though they sleep around it dreaming of the apples within.

Bruce, your ground is the opposite of ours. We have sandy loam until you get down a few feet. Then you hit hard clay.

Interesting that you can screw up the deers' depth perception. Useful too since shorter fence is also cheaper .
If they don't go in for the apples, I really doubt they will go in for whatever might be in the yard where the chickens will be. The chickens wouldn't leave anything the deer want

T posts for 6' fence? How do you get enough vertical stability? Might be a question for DH

Sandy loam over clay huh? The difference is we have rocks IN clay

and this is the barnyard.

About your fencing problem. I would like to suggest you go to Premier Fencing web site and check out the electric nettng for poultry. It is portable ie moveable. The greatest expense is the charger. I have used their products for 12 years and found them to be excellent with good "how to" support. It will not keep deer out but enither will a hot wire on a 6 ' fence. Deer can clear 8' with no problem. There is another B.Y.C. member I conversed with that has used it with great success. I have found doing it right the first time is actually a whole lot cheeper in the long run. I think if you google Premier Fencing you can get their web addresss. Don't have it handy , sorry.

I haven't used them but here is the web site http://www.premier1supplies.com/

I'm still trying to figure out my "open day run, what to do about predators" plan so thanks for the tip.

We did check this out previously. Wondering ... do you have a raccoon problem in your area? Thanks. ~Dee~

Quote: DH said he will be bracing the corners. Also he did our apple orchard with 6' fence and stakes with no stability issues. It has been there for 15 years with no problems. Plus planning for the paddock he will put electric wire around wire fencing about six strands which includes the top one. Thinking now we may get hex wire w/o PVC so entire fence will be grounded. Thereby stopping animals from pushing on the fence. Plus 2 ft. wire bent in L so 1/2 is on the ground & 1/2 is up the fence. The wire on the ground will shock anything that steps on it if they put their nose on the electric wires on the fence. The top strand of electric wire will be higher than 6'. Realize that one won't shock a deer. Thinking visually the deer won't want to jump over it because the deer have not jumped over the 6' fence to get apples so we feel it would work. But we are still planning so this is where we are today. We realize our eggs are going to be very expensive!
