Australorps breed Thread

Welcome aboard Aussieross..Hope you are well on the mend..look forward to your input and enjoying your banter with Geoff, ...it gives us insight into the feelings and workings of your breeders..I used to belong to an australian forum with someone who called himself "ancient australorp" he was a wealth of knowlege..some people thought it was Ray Connor , but I didnt think so..he sure knew Australorps...

We have the same discussions here..This is just my humble opinion but lot of ours have fallen into very poor quality on both ends of the spectrum..too poor all over, I wont say hatchery, and somehat too fluffy and spattered with a few very good ones inbetween..Its just a mess . you will see some impressive birds show up here ..and a great will to get it right. a few people are closing in on it....what I mean is, if you look at blk rosecomb, they have almost hit the apex with those...black australorp are all over the place , from fluffy , too slim odd looking with a few correct features..I dont know..it gets discouraging sometimes to me..
The discussions are usually SOP..so same thing..Usually you have to make them SOP..yes I know that..but sometimes you have to do something brave in the breeding dept to get a result because it is in need of a fix. keep walking the same line? or attempt to fix it? without imports it needs a creative hand.

I've obviously managed to offend Ross straight off. Poor Ross, I've been wanting to vent my spleen on someone from the Aussie club for ages about the sarcastic and inappropriate comments(called "cheeky") re our recent SOP revision posted on their official website. Can't do it on the club forum 'cause, as you've found Aveca, it's disappointingly inactive.This was my sole reason for not joining. It was also criticised in an editorial of Australasian Poultry magazine, so I'm far from alone! Happy to engage in banter/debate, but don't want to get personal over issues that have bedevilled us for 100 years!

Ok! I have read on here until my eyes feel crossed and my neck hurts! I want some Quality Australorps to start a small flock.

Please help me figure out what my options are and where I can get them. I prefer day old chicks. At least that is what I am thinking. I have not seen any Australorps at Rural King or TSC this year so far. Should I just order from a hatchery? I am concerned a little about the Quality of birds I might get.

Should I buy from a private breeder? Who has a good reputation and will have chicks available in the next few weeks?

Please don't hesitate to give me some direction or options. I realize the best is always an opinion formed by each individual, but I need some options. Also feel free to send me a private message.

I am new to chickens but not breeding. I have bred dogs for many years and bred many winners, Grand Final winners, & show Champions. I just want to get a start in Chickens and Australorps I think are gonna be my breed of choice?

Should I keep only one breed or mix in other breeds? Help!!

I am in Southern IL.

There are several breeders right in this thread you can contact..they have some very nice birds ..If you tour some of the profiles you can see who has birds or eggs ect...for sale..sometimes they advertise it in thier signature.

Hopefully he will come back and speak and discuss it more....Im just surpised you are having these discussions too..yes I found it amazingly slow too..I was an outsider so spent my time reading And asking some questions..found there were too many cheifs and not enough braves..

I bought from Cackle Hatchery and then started reading about hatchery birds being bred for egg production only so I ordered more from Duane Urch, his last sale date this year is May 20 so call him quickly if you want to try his chicks.

Play nice. Anything that we can learn from either one of you will be a plus. There is enough DRAMA on other websites that is why alot of us are here. As Aveca has pointed out we are all over the map of SOP Australorps with type problems, combs, tails, weights, you name it. We are trying and will continue to do so. I am not afraid to post pics of my birds and have someone with years of experience tell me what is wrong with them. So welcome to all with years of experience and don't run away with much needed knowledge. Although our SOP's are quite similar in text, anyone with eyes can see a world of difference between your birds and ours. Lets get back to posting pics and talking bout how to improve our birds.
