Australorps breed Thread

Luluann,
I agree with Aveca, that is a lot of white. In the last few dozen pages I have posted pics of day old, two week old, and 4 week old BA's just for this reason of comparing. They are all born black and white with some being more black than white. I would also check the feet. BA's have slate legs and whitish pink soles. When they are born sometimes half the leg is slate with long pink toes, but that will change. If the legs are yellow or the soles are yellow, then they are not BA's. I tell people all the time that there are alot of black chickens out there, but that does not make them Australorps. Feed store are notorious for calling all black chickens Australorps. Check out the pics I posted and let us know. I hope this helps. Try page 201 and 202.

What about Robert Whitney in Bath NY ??? I've seen his birds at shows. They are gorgeous & big

and he wins with them. Unfortunately, I have no contact information for him.

Maybe someone here could help both of us out with some contact info.
Bob Whitney is one of the nicest guy in the world..his birds have won shows from ohio to maryland to maine..lot of english championshhips and LF awards with his birds..from experience they are big , robust healthy birds and I LOVE them..I was going to set up in his birds ..but got caught up in some other breeds instead..last show I was at almost 2500 birds , he was english champ and reserve..and people from way out of state were picking up some pairs from him..those were some show stoppers..you walked into the sale barn and they stood out like a big beautiful sore thumb.absolutly stunning.
he will do a hatch and mail last I knew..but talk to him yourself..super guy..Like I said, from my experience they are very healthy prolific birds and if your going to feed a bird as dragon lady says, might as well feed a good one as a poor one..costs just as much..My Whitney rooster is just beautiful in person. If you get them and ever find they arnt for you, calal me and I will buy them from you. the only thing is, when you work with breeders, you cant order females , you get straight run..but the quality is great so properly keeping a couple roosters would be worth it, an heir and a spare.

Sounds like Robert Whitney's Australorp might be an exellent choice to compliment the six from the Urch line that I am purchasing this spring. thanks for the information

RattlesnakeRidgewv,
well I looked at some that was posted they were solid black. Well mine are not I don't remember seeing any pink toes but some have black on their legs. I'm going to post pictures of them and this make me very mad.

Luluann,
Don't fret. Different lines (breeders) of BA's feather out different, give it some time. Look at the difference between Tigercreeks line on page 201 and then compare it to the Duane Urch line on page 202. They all turn totally black as they grow unless there is a mix somewhere. The legs usually tell the true story that I listed earlier.

i have looked at other chick pictures and they kind of look like mine but I'm still unsure. It just upsets me that I was told they were one thing and now I find out they may not be. But I still love them the same I do have a favorite to and I think its a rooster.

Howdy Ross, good to hear your on this site! wishing you a pleasant stay!
We here at Hupp Farm have been raising BAs since the mid 90's and as hard as i have stayed true to the American Standard, none of the birds I've bred (several champions) or have seen at any shows compare to the Australorps of Australia.
The faces, heads, combs, bodies and stances are in MY opinion the best on the planet and rightly so because Australian ancestry is one of the founding forces in the succession of the breed.
If there was only a way to obtain the DNA and bring that to America in an affordable fashion, would the American Australorps truly shine!

So ship us over a hundred or so breeding pens (for free....ha ha) and make a huge contribution to the Australorp breed here in America! Arizona is a good place to start!!!!!

G'day Chester and Berta,

It's great to see someone on this forum that I actually know! I've been watching for a few of your posts on Facebook and your fowls are looking great.

I wish there was a way to get some stock over to you, but between Australian Primary and USDA it's a long and expensive exercise to get fertile eggs into the USA.

It's early Sunday morning here and I've just fed all my fowls. Later I'm going down to an auction run by Steve Higgins local poultry club, just for a look (not to buy - I have too many now) and to say hello to some old friends. I'm no longer an active member, as you know I had that massive heart attack and I've been just cruising.

Steve and I are going to the Australian Australorp Tiltes in June at a place called Dubbo in NSW. It's about a 10 hour drive, so he'll do most of the driving. He has some cracking large Australorps this season and he's a big chance of winning it again. I have some handy Bantams that will give that section a nudge, but I didn't breed Large this season as I still can't get around all that well.

They also hold the Australian Langshan Titles at the same venue at that show and I have a small team that might do well. But its in the hands of the Judges, and as long as we have a good time, have a few quiet beers and meet friendly folk, it will be all worthwhile.

Chet, old mate, it's great to hear from you, and I'll support this forum a little more now that I know someone. I had a bit of a rough time with my first post, but I just brush that off.

Cheers to you and Berta and kind regards,

Ross
