I candled the Blue Australorp eggs from Huppfarms today and 12 of 14 are developing on day 7!

So happy for you!! Mine are due this time next week..15 are going on..quite exciting, all that and the post office had left them out on the wood pile for we dont know how long, probably over night in sub zero weather..I think the medishipper saved them.. ..please share pics when they hatch..!

Ross You should write a book..proper poultry keeping was almost a lost art in large part of america after industrial revolution , it has grown in popularity over the years outside of a few old timers that kept the hobby going.. ,lot of US breeds nearly went extinct in favor of commercial egg and meat production.. so many people have so many questions..this is a great set up your showing..it gives people a very good idea on what is involved in proper poultry keeping on a show farm..

Best of luck with your hatch. We definitely want pictures of them new blues. I am on day 14 with 7 out of 8 doing fine. Due to hatch the 28th from Hupp Farm also.

Thanks Bill,
not her best angle, perhaps, but she seems to have nice curve and, if you 'smooth out' her outline a little, the tail conformation is getting rounder rather than the upright tendency in the Utilities. Just needs the right boy, mate!

I have 2 young cockerels. This one maybe worth using. He is going on 7 months old. Our weather has been stuck in "freezer" temps. We're averaging 20 degrees under average. So, a slow start here. I have my other boy with his mom hoping to get closer to the type we like.

I finnally had the time to sit and read my calander book over ,Mine should start 27th PM..Getting excited..everything looking great..kept record and photos as I went along including a couple candeling pics..have a different breed along for the ride .. and this is the first year I will be hatching from my blk orp pen..finnally decided what I wanted to put together took me a long time to decide on a rooster and make that choice took him around to couple shows for judges opinion and his over all vibrant health good temper minimal flaws so it will be exciting to see how they develop..the only problem im having is her eggs dont want to dry down well so hoping the shells arnt thick...will be crossing the aussies back to the whitney aussie rooster for next year..send some of those back to Chet and Berta .going to be very interesting.

I notice a lot of you are hatching chickens now in March. Is this the normal time to hatch chicks for the shows?
Given their ages now, I would assume that you be showing in Young Bird Shows from about August / September on?

Our show season has just started and my first show is around mid April and the last will be end July. As I only have a small team this year compared to most other years I have to be carteful not to overshow any good individual fowl.

Geoff, If you see this George Norman from Benalla won the Champion Large Australorp at Sydney Royal yesterday with a Black Pullet.

We have a very big show in Stockton CA in January. Other shows seem to be going on all the time in the US. They just had one in Florida last weekend from a new little club there.

i cant wait to get into the showing scene! one my little hatchery birds grow up i can invest and get some quality lines going! have decided that this breed and black langshans are gonna be my prject breeds...bot are similar in that we are tyring to match them to their over-seas couterparts! cant wait!

Ross, it's spring here, which is common "chick season." It really depends on where you are in the country. In Florida, we just had our state fair and my county's fair is the first week in April. The shows in Florida seem to run September to April due to the heat in the summer. Where I'm from in Ohio, the state fair is in August and my county's fair was the second week of October. Ohio's show season runs more Spring to Fall because of the cold of winter. I'm just starting my pure bred projects (using part of our tax return), so I'm not worried about showing until at least next year. Maybe I'll show in the spring if the chicks I have now are nice enough.

Which, btw, any breeders in the states have eggs or chicks available to ship? Looking for large, black, show quality stock.
