I've been wondering where you have been. Need to hear your input more often. Been so long that I got you mixed up with the other Dan! How are those birds you got doing?? Maybe you can send a few eggs to the other Dan, MeanV2. I promised him some, but won't have any for a few months. Mine are most likely not the quality of your's anyway. ......stan

My birds are doing great. One of them was very sick and I was told to expect the worse, but somehow I pulled her from the brink of death and she's back to normal and laying, though it took over a month of care.

MeanV2 contacted me last week or so because I am sort of in his part of the U.S.; I'm not going to have any eggs to sell or chicks for that matter for quite a while. My job is going crazy right now which is taking up most of my time and I still have to build more housing for the birds. Right now they are okay, but I need a better set up. As for mine being better, well I don't know about that! You've shown some fine birds on here in the past. Gotta run..working this afternoon, which I'm not at all happy about. Take care.
 
OK Australorp experts...I need opinions...I have a batch of 10 BA chicks that were supposed to all be pullets. So, I have this little one. They are all 4wks tomorrow. This one isn't any larger/smaller than the others (or my EE's I got at the same time), but his/her comb is slightly more pronounced than the others (although they all have some comb showing).

But I also see wattles starting to form. Do females have this too? His/her tail feathers are slightly longer than the others, but not overly so...and if it's a roo, when would the spurs start showing?

So, is this a pullet or a roo? What's your best guess?

Hi Dawn!

It's a bit harder to tell at 4 weeks, but yes leaning toward being a cockerel. If so, the wattles and comb will be a lot bigger and redder than the pullets in two more weeks.

Hatcheries are 85% correct with BAs even with vent sexing.

My money says cockerel with the waddles and comb showing at four weeks. BA's usually take me about 6 weeks to be sure. Give it another 2 weeks and compare it to your other BA's. Spurs will take a long time to show up. You will know it is a cockerel long before spurs show. Check out my album under my profile. I took pics of BA's every two weeks just so people like you could see the growth of a cockerel and a pullet.

From what I have learned on here look at the bottoms of the feet. A BA should be pink or white, but if they are yellow then you may have a BJG.
