Australorps breed Thread

Purchased these from Mr. Urch.
10 BA, 8 Silver Penciled Wyandotte, and 8 Buckeye.
No White Jersey Giant were available, Cock died.
June 3, I will be getting a few more BAs from Cackle along with silkies for brooding, looking forward to comparing, I have read a lot (on this web site) about variation in size between breeders so I will be able to learn first hand.
I do not plan on ever showing.
Did Ya get all moved yet?

I will be very interested to follow your flocks progression/comparisons and hear your evaluations. Please do keep us posted if you don't mind. Sounds fascinating to me. It may be obvious but to be clear. Is your focus on healthy egg laying capabilities as well since you are not showing? I only ask because it is my own focus. Not to discount breeding for showing as it in itself is a glorious pursuit which I admire and envy. ~Dee~

one of the ten BA chicks hatched on the morning of April 8 has wing tip feathers much longer than the other nine, is this significant?
With feather sexing, as I recall so check on it, the number of rows at three days old are checked.

I do not remember if BAs were listed as being a feather sexable breed.

Dee,
The comparison will be with the BA breed. I wanted to compare White Jersey Giant also but none were available.
The large fowl I am getting from Cackle are Buff Brahma, BA, White Jersey Giant and Buff Orpington. I also purchased a silkie assortment, color didn't matter I am wanting broodies. My intention is to have a fun backyard small farm flock and the BA comparison is mostly private, way too small a sample size for proper statistical analysis. Private message me next year at this time if you want to know which batch won the two Cock and six Hen "ocap keeper" award.

My backyard fun will be with the hens raising chicks and eating my ticks BEFORE the predators kill our babies, my poodle cross dog learned to be a chicken guard dog last summer so I have help with the predators but she is eight years old and a slight hip problem but chasing the wild turkey and deer takes away the pain. She did not like it when the chickens come up join her for dinner, the "rocks" did not understand that curled dog nose means stop eating my "dog chow".
