Australorps breed Thread

I'm comparing them to my older full grown chickens and other people BA's.

I have hatchery Australorps form Cackle and Breeder quality Australorps from Hupp Farm. The Hatchery Australorps are a couple of pounds smaller than the Hupp Lorps.

I love both types though

Oh,okay thanks!Mine look about the same size maybe smaller though oh well. They some good size eggs :D

One of my Australorps is a fair bit bigger than the other. Is that normal?? Did yours grow at different rates?

I had one of the Cackle Australorps that was a lot bigger. She was much closer to the Standard too.

You would use the nicer ones for breeding.

I also have three Black Australorps, all from the same hatchery (Baxter Barn, I think), and from two days old, one was noticeably larger than the others. This continued to a degree where we initially thought she was a Jersey Giant, or at the very least a BA rooster. But nope, she's a hen! They're 15 weeks today. We call the big one Scarecrow

I have two pullets that I'm sure came from the same hatch (I got them at 2 mo so not sure). They act as if they have been together from the very beginning. YET they are very different in temperament and structure. The hen who is at the bottom of the flock order is really the nicer hen in structure and has always been since the girls were 2 mo old. I have some concerns about the other pullet, Jedi and whether she will produce well. Only time will tell I suppose. So even if they came from the same hatch, they can be so different.

I recently hatched some leghorns. The two pullet chicks from that group same thing. One was really nice.....the other a real scrapper.

Beautiful girls! I can't wait until mine look like that!

I love this Picture ..

I hope you can get them out of the nest box at night. It is not fun cleaning the poo out each morning.

You have a very nice flock. The are great foragers too I can see...

Thanks for the kind words! I do love those silly birds....
No it isn't any fun cleaning out the boxes every day. Hopefully I can get them turned around. Other than their weird sleeping habits, I have no complaints--BAs are just a terrific breed. And such great layers-I'm still getting 2-3 eggs a day from 4 pullets and it is darn near December with temps hovering in the 20s and no supplemental lighting! Can't beat that!
