Australorps breed Thread

What do you much more knowledgeable folks think of my chances of having a decent result from breeding a nice heritage roo to a hatchery hen? Due to recent issues, traveling long distances are out of the question and no one I can locate close by has any heritage Aussie stock. I hate to resort to mailorder but it's better, I hope, than not having any Aussies at all.
If you need to breed...go for it...Chickens aren't like elephants...21 days and you have a whole hew generation.

Breed your heritage cock to the hen, then breed him to his best pullets. By then, you should be able to get more heritage birds to mess with. Unless you are deep into showing, what difference does it make? JMHO

I am not looking to show. I just know that the heritage birds have traits that just aren't there in the birds bred for production from most hatcheries. I am honestly more interested in healthy, good tempered, larger birds than I am in egg laying machines. Tho I do absolutely love those eggs!

I wish we were closer I have 9 nice Gilbert pullets and I am cutting down to 3. I will have 3 that I will be getting rid of. They are all laying and I am getting 4 dz eggs a week.

You may have a whole generation in 21 days but you really don't know what you have for several months.

That couldn't be more true but since there seems to no interest in showing, the better option would be to simply not worry about the standard and for that matter, it might even be a disadvantage to use the Heritage cock...so it can cut both ways...one uses what they have if they aren't seeking a particular result, other than eggs.

EDIT: There is one hatchery that sells excellent birds. They brought in some SOP genetics on several breeds two years ago.

My 9 pullets are showline from Gilbert's here in IL. They are currently laying 4 dz eggs a week. IMO that is pretty good egg production for a Heritage show line. At least it is very acceptable to me. Getting ready to setup my breeding pens and I have one Tigercreek Roo that will be going into one pen. Exciting time.
