Australorps breed Thread

Soooo.... The feed store got in a shipment of Blacks. There's still thirty. I have full will to buy whatever's leftover on Friday. But that goes against my plan to find juvies... Hmm... What to do what to do.

See Where ?
Oh I wondered how they did that ..would they all be white ?

OOPs that sounds like a Sore Spot ...well his buddy has a great flock
No sore spot for me...The Austra-Whites ARE created by crossing the two purebeds...Australorp Cock over a White Leghorn hen.

The color is base white with few to several smallish black spots or even good sized patched areas.

Thanks for posting the link ...Nice Flocks
It sounded like you wished he didnt do it .

does it only work with white leghorns ..Does it work with other white chickens ?
I kind of thought this dudes mom was a white Plymouth Rock

and he is black like papa
I didn't really care that he sold the Australorps (cut down the work load) but I am a bit chagrin that he had all along in mind to double the size of the NN flock AND bring in this number of 65 hatchery Austra-Whites. Of course, we had discussed bringing in a 'small' number ( I thought 15) of them to play around with, kinda' on the side but he seems to enjoy carrying a larger sack of marbles than I would wish to tote.

It's not that they are bad birds, but rather it's the surprise of it all. Here's a couple pics of Austra-Whites... Said to be excellent layers of off-white (yellowish-tan eggs), purported to be large and potentially laying over 300 eggs per year.

EDIT: To completely answer your question...To my knowledge, an Austra-White can only be produced by crossing an Australorp cock bird over a White Leghorn hen.

Jason further explained that he wanted to bring in the White Leghorn for some time but figured he cold kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. He had a buyer for the Australorp flock at an extremely favorable price and he could bring in the White Leghorn very quickly and very inexpensively, without having to deal with the stage of making the cross of Australorp/White Leghorn ourselves. His term..."WIN-WIN.

My black Aussie babies are arriving from Cackle in a couple weeks (PLZ!!! let it warm up by then) but my dream is to someday get some Blue Aussies. I know the breeder of quality Aussies is Texas has them (forgot his name) but he wont ship birds, only eggs.
