Do they get feed as well as cracked corn each day?
I can't give my Australops cracked corn because it causes fatty liver disease. Two of mine have died form fatty liver disease. The Necropsy report said that Australorps are prone to it. The liver ruptures and they bleed out.
I give mine a bird seed mixture that I get from costco mixed in with calf manna, fish and sweet potato cat food and timothy hay pellets. High protein and low carbs for them. They love it!
The protein is fine--its the carbs that cause fatty liver. Watch giving them things like white bread, pasta noodles and etc. My chickens get veggie scraps mostly. They do get beans sometimes but the carbs are more complex in beans. The mixture I posted above is a treat for them instead of scratch. So do you think Australorps would benefit from a lower protein (15-16%) feed over the 20% flock raiser I'm using? I didn't realize this could be an issue for them.
I've read that overweight hens don't lay as well and are more prone to laying double yolkers. Perhaps if they were on a fixed ration and not allowed to just pig out, this is probably ideal with free range available daily, so they can make up what's missing on their own and get exercise while they are at it?The protein is fine--its the carbs that cause fatty liver. Australorps do well with 20% protein while growing. Hens should have 16% layer when laying eggs. Higher protein would be fine but some think too high of protein will lower egg production.
