Australorps breed Thread

I would love to see how you incorporated the ladder. I've got a silkie that can't make it to the top roost so has to sleep alone on the bottom one every night. I went to a lot of trouble to renovate so I could make the roost longer so she could fit up with the others so that is a bit of disappointment lol. With winter coming I've been wondering how I could get her up with the others.

As for flying our australorp years ago was a real escape artist, and we ended up with a 8' fence to keep it in. It only ever escaped into the re back yard from their run though. Wasn't interested in jumping the 6' fence the other direction.

Two 1x4x8 at least as long as the distance between the roosts placed parallel. Dowel rods screwed in to form "rungs." Screw to roost. :)

You can have as many rungs as needed that way.

Well, I found out today that it is definitely NOT one of my Aussies leaving me eggs. It's a Barred Rock that started laying at 18 weeks. My Aussies are 22 weeks old now and not yet laying. I'm excited for them to start so I can compare eggs from the two breeds.

They will start soon for you--within two weeks now.

I have a question. I have a wonderful Austrlorp! She's always been my sweetest hen. She is attempting to go broody. She sat for 4-5 hours yesterday and gave up. In the last 4 days her hair has been sticking up on her neck and has turned mean! Is this a broody process ? Even though she's trying to get the broody blood pumping or is something going on in my standard flock. She is the lowest in the pecking order. I love her but am a bit scared of her right now. Is this normal ?
P.S I have a broody right now who is sweet never acted like this!

Some hens get feisty when they go broody while others do not. I have an Australorp that is broody now and I can pick her up and move her around. The SG Dorking on the other hand...watch out!

Your girl may not stick with it though. It is common for a hen to start going broody and not staying that way. Do not put eggs under her for a while(one to two weeks of sitting most of the day). Also, being low on the pecking order is not good if they are together in the same pen. Moving her out might break her from being broody though.

The feisty broody thing was what I was thinking. Just shocked at her attitude. One of my other hens is finishing up raiding her chicks. She allowed me to move her around like a rag doll with out getting upset. She wS the top if pecking order now working back up while laying eggs and staying with chicks. I don't expect my Austrlorp to follow through she's only a year and no feathers removed. I hope she becomes nice again!

She will--the nice hormones will come back after the broodiness breaks.
