Australorps breed Thread

It's not difficult at all, and doesn't even involve going inside the roo, it literally takes 10 seconds... Most breeders do it. They separate the hens from Roos to keep them in condition and AI them. I let mine stay together but my austrolorps are so big that they can't naturally mount.

They must be huge? Mine are pretty big and we don't have a roo but I can't imagine it being an issue. How much do yours weigh?

Well decided to go get some photos of my girls as I'm pretty sure we must be getting close to laying and haven't updated for a while. Lucky I did. Pepper came running out with something in her beak and the others chasing and when I investigated it was some egg shell. Checked out the nesting box and there was a broken egg and she was eating it. Arghhhhhhhh. It was quite small and there was another small one too so wouldn't be surprised if one of the "babies" laid it but right on the edge so it broke.

Have hosed it out and changed all the hay. Thinking I will keep an eye out for the next few days and collect eggs as soon as they are laid. Fingers crossed she hasn't thought about opening any eggs herself.

The boy weighed 12 pounds now he weighs 9, but he grew bigger. I don't understand it, I deformed them and give them enough protein, but the hens weigh 10 pounds.

What's the protein % and do you feed them cracked corn or any feed high in carbs? If you want them bigger you could give them more carbs to make them fatter or if you want more muscle bump up the protein.

The standard is for the male to weigh between 7 and 9 pounds. He was actually too big but is fine now. A pound over is fine for them.

Sadly, Judges at shows are not judging weight correctly for Australorps. It almost seems like they want to use Orpington standards.

The Australorp is the descendant of the Orpington. The standards get pretty close.
