Ron is correct. Your pullet will go thru about 3 juvenile molts before she gets her adult feathers. If she is a purebred Australorp then by the time she lays an egg she will be jet black with a green sheen to her feathers which comes from the oil gland at the base of the tail.

Can you guys please tell me if my Australorp/Orpington chicks are pullets or cockerels? Normally I can tell by comparing, but the purple on the second one's face is throwing a curve ball at me. Thanks!

Hi, hoping someone can steer me in the right direction with my mystery chick please.

I recently hatched chicks - Black Australorps and Barred Plymouth Rocks. These eggs were shipped to by the breeder who brings in fertile eggs directly out of Australia.

This 'odd' chick is nothing like I expected to hatch. The breeder does also breed Light Sussex and he suspects that this is what this chick might be. (Quietly, I hoping it might be a splash Australorp). Need the experts opinions please. The photo doesn't quite show the true coloring. The legs are slate, there is definitely a 'silver' patch on the top of the head, and a slight 'silvery' sheen on top of the yellow down on the body. Eyes are a deep black.

This is the colouring on an Australian splash Australorp

It's back etc still had that dusty grey quality like on the head to its colour rather than that full yellow of a white bird. Yours doesn't really look like my splash did so I'm going to guess its more likely a light Sussex, though if it's got more of a grey over the yellow......... It would ask him what colours he had in his Aussie breeding pen as you need a certain colour combination to get splash. If he only has blacks it's not possible.

Thanks also appps, I really appreciate your thoughts. I'd SO LOVE a splash (rooster or hen wouldn't matter to me). I already have 3 Black Australorps from the same breeder. They are such extraordinarily beautiful birds. I totally love them so much. Their personalities are a match for their beauty! It would be wonderful to be able to breed some blues or splashes myself.....so that's why I'm hoping this little one might just turn out to be a splash. There is definitely a silver over the yellow down on the body. It's faint, but it is there. Yes, I will contact the breeder and ask if he has any other color Australorps....but I think he only has black.

Would love to hear from anyone else with an opinion.

Yes! Splash is a part of Blue, Black splash genetics.

Rottnots post shows how the colours work. If he only has black they won't give splash. Fingers crossed for you he has added a few new colours lately as you need blue in the parents or two splash as that's the only way it can be splash. If either parent is black it just won't work.
