Australorps breed Thread

I'm spending probably a couple K on coop/greenhouse, then will have to see how much I have left to spend on pricey birds lol. Picked up a breeding trio of Golden Cuckoo Marans today. Fairly cheap too, $36 for the trio.

I bet those look pretty, too, but I prefer the lighter colored eggs because they are easier to see through when I candle them for hatching in my incubators.

Don't know what I'm gonna do about the paddock. I'm going to build a hoop coop chicken powered composter attached to the 16x24 coop so they will have that secure place. But I'll have about 1200 sq ft with 6ft chain link and hot wire. I might have to add a fenced area so I can net it. They can paddock when I'm out there working. With a shotgun.

Make sure the top is covered too since hawks can fly in there to grab them otherwise. We have coyotes here and they can jump 7-foot fences.

I'm going to try for a heavier, sometimes broody multi colored layer flock. I want the cockerels to put on enough size to be good in the pot, and lots of colors for selling at the farmer's market and swap meet. No one around here does that. So basically, an Australorp that lays colors. Cammo especially lol.

Yep, saw one take my last BO years ago. So I might set up a small area that is netted on top. Or figure out how to run the hot wire over it. Now that would be a show. One of the redtails getting zapped lol.

Some of the Blue australorps will go broody more than the Hatchery BAs

True and I lost a Splash hen this past summer because she picked the highest summer desert temps time to go broody. Thank goodness I had some of her eggs in the incubator already, so I have one of her Splash daughters and now hoping that some of her eggs will now hatch to give me more.

That would do nothing. The "target" has to be in contact with both the hot wire and ground. That is why birds can sit on the electric wires and not get fried.

Oh I hope you get good ones. Then you can send me one.
