Australorps breed Thread

One of my BA's grew up to be a rooster! He was lovely. And actually very sweet, but when he started crowing far too much I had to rehome him. The man that took him in had a flock of 9 BA's. He had ordered females hoping at least one would be a roo by mistake, so he was happy to take mine. He sends me email updates and pics of Thor. So far Thor has fought off a fox and a small dog and saved his hens, sustaining only minor injuries. I want to have a rooster some day. It would bring me more peace of mind when my girls are out there with their butts pointing at the sky.

I wonder: if I went to all my neighbors and asked them if they would mind a rooster, could I get away with it then? So far they were all perfectly fine with the chickens. It's not against our town law or neighborhood rules, I just thought it would be polite. But we aren't technically supposed to have roos. My girls are getting pretty bright. They run for cover now when they see big shadows overhead. They were terrified of a kite once....

I have 2! A boy and a gal, it looks like (they are a month old)

they might like hearing a rooster crow or you might have to give them free eggs to ignore your roo. i try to keep it under 6 roosters here but we are zoned agricultural.

The Austalorps from Australia are gorgeous! This is my 7 month old Australorp Griselda. Not SQ but I love her just the same. She's very timid, quiet and so far seems to be a very consistent layer. This picture was taken on a cloudy day. I'll try and get a better pic when it's sunny outside. I really wish I had gotten more Austalorps
