Australorps breed Thread

I ordered from Cackle this year... first time. Not b.a.s but bantam eggers and bantam silkies. The first batch arrived completely dead. The second batch arrived with one dead, and 6 more died within several days. They are 6 weeks old now, and I have another with a prolapsed uterus, and 2 with crossed beaks. I had intended to use them in a special breeding project but can't because of the poor quality of the birds.

I don't plan to order anything from Cackle again.

Just my experience.

My cock of Sherman Lines

Hi fellow lorp owners. I'm new to the forum, and have had my little flock of five birds since January. One of my "hens" turned out to be a rooster, and this one looks quite a bit different than my other girls... any ideas? Cross breed or just funny genetics? This is Jade:

This is my roo giving me the stink eye for looking at his lady:

A while ago I posted that I had 4 (seven day old) Australorps . Well they are out in the teen pen now and I'm delighted to say... blending in very well.
One problem cropped up. Originally I bought 4 so I could give 2 to a little friend who can't raise chicks... rather her momma doesn't want her to. WELL I love them so , these are great hens. I guess I must follow through with my promise, as she has done her homework per my suggestion. I'm going to get the book suggested ASAP and am eager to learn more. Thanks for the info. Next year I'm going to expand the Aussie's... 2 is not enough

I feel like a horrible chicken mommy... I dont really know how old they are! I got them from my mom, who got them from a friend at work who was overpopulated, in December. They started laying in January. My roo didn't actually look like a roo until early march, just like a tall skinny hen. Less than a year is my best guess, lol, and they all started laying within a week of eachother, so must be very similar ages.

oh, torrelee, u r not a bad Mum! They're adopted!
If they all began laying in January, that would make them (roughly) 5-6 months old then, making the roo development date about 7-8 months. Just trying to do calculations for my own new BA babies. Last year's girls came into laying at around 4.5 months, so I know how they roll, but not roos. I just got my first one this March, at two days old.
Your boy is just beautiful, and makes possible homegrown fuzzy-butts!!! Hooray!

Bright Blessings!

We're looking into Black Australorps as a good main layer breed for us--not only for their excellent egg production but also their docile nature, tendencies toward broodiness, and cold/heat tolerance. I'd rather not order from a hatchery. Can someone tell me about the best breeder lines in the U.S.? Where would you buy hatching eggs or chicks?
