Australorps breed Thread

HI EVERYONE!!!! I am back! hehe I have had a lot of stuff going on over here in the real life corner so I have not been able to post on BYC for a bit. I am so glad to see that everyone is still doing well and we have a few newcomers to the thread.

Torrelee: You have a very pretty Roo.

matte: I got BA's last year from Ideal. Very beautiful chickens and they started laying around the 16 week mark. Not bad at all for hatchery chickens.

I am still trying to find a way to get live birds sent from Aussieland *LOL* I told my husband that I have been saving for a "vacation" to Australia for which he replied, "Yeah a vacation that includes figuring out how to bring home 50 more chickens right?"

Gotta head out to the ladies morning breakfast. You all take care.

Sorry to hear about your troubles MyKidLuvsGreenEgz,

I ordered an Urban pack of BA's, Standard from Cackle Hatchery in January for Feb. 11 Delivery. All five showed up alive and kicking(well peeping). They are of course hatchery birds but are now 10 weeks old and living in the new coop. These are my first chickens since I was 17 and we moved to a City that still does not allow chickens. I now live in one of the "chicken friendly" cities, Woodland, CA. We are allowed to have 6 chickens, 40 feet from the neighbors house. The BA's are not as round as the ones from Australia and still have some white feathers, but one of them is very pretty. For a while I thought she was a her, but at 10 weeks there are no rooster signs. I can't post here for now, so try this(need to post More):

I will post newer pictures later--They are on my other computer.

Of course since I am allowed to have 6 and I only had 5, I picked up 3 RIR chicks from a farm store in Dixon, CA called Higby's. They are from Ideal and are now 4 weeks old...and of course I really wanted eggs, so I picked up 2 Red Star's(18 week started Pullets that started laying 5 days after getting them) from a guy in Folsom CA. I keep the big ones in a little coop and will eventually try adding one of the other Chicks(probably one of the BA's since they are supposed to get along with other breeds better than RIR's). So, since I will have 7 in one coop and 3 in another I will be ok right?

Bye for now,

Ron

Does anyone have hatchery BA chicks that turned out to be good broodies? Which hatchery? I'd like to end up with some broody hens but I know some hatchery lines have lost that tendency.

I got 5 Ideal BA pullets and out of them 2 have just gone broody, which is awesome cause I have one SLW sitting on a clutch right now so I have the hatch bug and want to set another 12 eggs. I will let you know how they do in 21 days hehe.

Yes, I have a hen from Dunlap Hatchery in Caldwell, ID who has turned out to be an amazing broody. She has been broody twice since she started laying last fall. I have not had any fertile eggs to set her on, but she found golf balls and absolutely nothing irresistable to try to hatch.
I have finally obtained a roo to give us some fertile eggs, but he is just a baby, 6 weeks old, today. I pray she can go thru the summer without broody-ing up again!
Her 5 "sisters" have never been broody (yet), and they will all be 1 year old next month.
AliceAnn, my broody, will always have a home with us, as we have been hoping to have a 'resident Mum' to hatch chooks.

Brightest Blessings!

I had two BAs from Ideal hatchery and one went broody and was a good mother.
