Australorps breed Thread

I got 4 BA from the feed store and I know I had 2 (sent one to a good home with 6 ladies) but I am suspicious about a third. It has the black eyes like the other 2 roos do but its wattles are lighter in color and not as red. My hen has gold eyes and also has lighter wattles. Any opinions? I can post a pic tomorrow.

Thanks so much for the input!
Bright Blessings!

Not sure, most likely 1 roo for sure, maybe 2 but I would wait to be positive. How do the tail and wing feathers look? Mine are much slower to come in on the cockrels. .....stan

Although these chicks are only part Australorp, it is my first time hatching chicks the natural way and I wanted to brag a little.

So far two chicks have hatched out! Not a good ratio but still very exciting. You can definitely tell who the Daddy is on both of them (my BA rooster). Almost completely pure black. Both of them hatched out from light brown eggs so I am going to say their Moms are one of the wyandottes. I had two eggs try to hatch out but just stopped in the middle of it. So we would have had four by now if not for that.

I took some pictures of the Mama and babies:

This is the first baby that hatched out yesterday, I just love her colour, it is like she is made out of black velvet:

This is the Golden-Laced Wyandotte hen that I put on the nest after 3 of 6 got up and did not come back:

This is new Mama with the first baby:

I watched this baby hatch this morning, it was so cool. I should have taken out the camera the first time so I could have gotten it on video but I did not think about it until it was too late:

And that's it for now, I am still going to try to get a hatching out on video, I just have to remember to take out the camera every time.

As I have been talking about in another thread, I will be acquiring 25 BA chicks on Tuesday. These are some of the birds they are out of. The pictures aren't the best in the world, but you can see what they look like.

Way back about 8 years ago I had a small flock of Aussies. But they all got killed by predators and I replaced them with different breeds.

Recently, I've wanted to get some more so I found a lady on CL that sold BA hatching eggs so I'm buying 2 dozen from her.

Really egg-cited (

) I've heard they do really good in heat and lay very well.
