Australorps breed Thread

howdy, what a nice name! hope you are enjoying her.
as feedstore birds go, they are production grade birds and very few of them have the quality for showing in competition. there are several things you look for when breeding for show quality, eye color is very important. you want a very dark brown eye (almost black) your bird has the light eye. another is the back and tail whick need a very slight curve up the tail at a 40 degree angle. skin and bottoms of feet to be white or pinkish. no green or yellow skin, shanks or toes, you want black. 5 pointed combs are most desireable, or less if your breeding to another with 6 or 7 points to breed out the numbers. no white feathers, even though the standard allows 1, that trait can continue in the breedings. even lenght waddles. look for a crowhead, you dont want that. it is a skull that is narrow in hieght and width. you want a full broad rounded head with eyes that appear awake and alert, not squinted and narrow in apperance.

some undesireable traits can take years to breed out of your stock but it can be done. i personally recommend to find breeders of quality birds and purchase hatching eggs, chicks or older chickens for breeding if you intend to show in competitive levels. as a breeder of australorps, we strive to maintain a standard of pure breed birds and keep the market full for the public buy, raise and maintain. eventurally depleting the cross breeds that seem to be flooding the market from the commercial hatcheries that most all feedstores are selling.

if you just enjoy back yard chickens for eggs and personal pleasure of thier visual antics, it doesnt matter what they look like! as long as you are having fun with them.

Mostly wanted to enter her for fun, just thought I'd use the prettiest of my birds and she's a pretty nice looking girl.

Oh what a pretty bunch of aussie girls!! And really beautiful in a group! I can't imagine what it would be like to have a bunch of sweety pies like that.
I have just one and she is the most friendly and gentle hen, I just love her, too. Her eggs are getting bigger, a little at a time. Hopefully by spring she'll be laying "large" eggs (2 oz. or bigger), right now they're only about 1.60 oz.

Enjoy!

What a great post! This is great information that's been hard for me to find. And I really appreciate your last sentence because it's so easy for quality breeders & showers to remember that some of us are loving our mutts just for their "...eggs and personal pleasure of their visual antics..". I love my girls!

Hi... gee does that sound familiar! I went thru pretty much the same exercise a couple of months ago! I bought a young pullet that was supposed to be a Black Sex Link, but ended up being an Aussie. Some suggested she might be a Jersey Giant based on photos. When I got her, the bottom of her feet were definitely yellow and she had almost not comb or wattle, and what was there was black. As her comb and wattles grew in they were definitely red, and her feet changed color to a cream color. She didn't grown to the Giant size, either. Ron's information is good, so just keep watching as she grows and you'll figure it out. It just takes some patience.

you can go online to the standard of the jersey giant and you will learn of yellow feet and skin also the standard calls for 6 points on the comb vs. 5 points required for black australorps, which also have white skin and white to pinkinsh white feet bottoms.

punch up the name of the breed on a search engine and most will give you the standard of the breeds and any varieties.
good luck and happy hatchings!

I took another pic of Black Jack today, he does like to pose for me

I go inside the coop and sure enough something had come in, killed the poor baby and eaten half of it's side right there in the coop. I could see it's heart .....

I love my Black Aussie juvies....I'm told they're great summer layers, and can tolerate the heat well. Plus they're so pretty! I thankfully have somemore BA eggs in the 'bator so hopefully I can get some replacements for the ones I lost. Next spring I would like to hatch out a whole bunch so they can be my main layer flock.
