Authentic Woods KD (Knock Down) 10' by 16' Coop Build

Pics
Oooh, this makes me wish I'd built bigger....Looks great and obviously the simple method laid out in the book goes much quicker than my way!!

Thanks.

The method IS SIMPLE and inexpensive (both points that I want to emphasize for those who follow threads such as this). I am lucky to have access to rough cut lumber which helps enormously but even with big box wood prices the lack of conventional stick framing eliminates 30-35% of the materials needed.

I paid for the additional wood I needed today, another $540 so total of $1190 for all wood in the coop and $70 for BJ57 plus hydrated lime for whitewash; I scrounged used tin for the roof so $0. The only big expense left is HC which for the run space under the coop and the adjacent 12' by 12' run will run another $400 so around $1,700 all in.

Make sure you leave some ventilation.

I worried about this the first night but when I saw the ladies in the morning everyone was good so I let it slide. Tonight we left two kiddie corners raised to allow a cross breeze (hope it does not attract any varmints!).

Thank you.

Oh wow that blue light really is gorgeous. And I didn't quite realize how LARGE those measurements are until I saw that ladder in your coop! WOW!

Maybe I'll start saving up to build one myself...

Lest anyone thinks I am beyond the pale the "blue light" is actually sun through the blue breathable waterproof membrane that I put on the roof before the metal sheets that will finish the roof. I was short a few boards and so that section was open with the membrane above when the picture was taken; now closed up.

(NB However, when I saw that picture I started thinking about how I could incorporate blue Plexiglas into the roof so that is waterproof as well as beautiful...)

Well, it's already blue, so just plain plexiglass over that section of roof would work. :D

The metal roof panels that will go on the coop are dark brown to match the garage and house; the current visible blue membrane goes on first and then gets covered. The real challenge would be how to make Plexiglas (or other material) water tight around the edges, not easy without spending more money and time than worthwhile.

A random thought only because the picture looks so good.

No, it wouldn't be easy....and was just 'dreaming'.
Only way would be to get clear roof panels with the same exact corrugation as your metal ones.

We moved the pullets into their new coop around 6pm, then re-located the bench and chair so we could open a bottle of bubbly to toast our efforts and MOSTLY that the ladies are now secure. I will make a 2nd post in a bit showing them in their new home.
