Authentic Woods KD (Knock Down) 10' by 16' Coop Build

Pics
You know, I just find those guys trimming trees in the local area and ask them to dump the truck in my back area. I get free chips and they don't have to pay to drop them at the dump and drive all the way over there.
Yes, lucky you, I have stopped them quite a few times, said they would dump a load. But, never showed up, I think it might be too much trouble to drive 2 miles up my private road. Too bad as I have plenty of room for them to dump and a very large drive way for them to turn around. Road is in very good condition, no trouble with large gravel trucks, etc.

I have continued to progress with the coop, yesterday got the steps and platform built and mostly installed. The steps are temporary but functional at the moment (rain was forecast for the next few days and I wanted the metal roof sheets on) when I finish I will post better pics.

The roof was quick and eliminated a minor leak that was coming through the underlayment membrane. The sheets may look bad with rust and some bent corners but the backside is clean and shiny and NO PERFORATIONS! I will wash and prep the surface and apply one, perhaps two, coats of red metal primer; longer term goal is paint it brown to match house and shop. Pretty certain I can get another 20 years out of the metal, no bad for zero cost.

Can't argue with the "free" roof. That price can't ever be beat.

I would like to recommend using something different that standard primer and paint on the roof. I am no expert, do not have metal roof on the house and my outbuilding aren't old enough to need repainting. BUT, I have seen people out here do the same as you said and had paint peeling the first year. I saw you using the tin snips, so I am assuming your don't have an angle grinder?? After owning one, I would never be without one. I cut my roof tin with one also.

I would wire brush the roof metal, maybe use a rust treatment, then a primer matching the roof coating and paint/coating made for roofing. You can get it in all colors but might cost you a bit more. Is it getting too cold up there to treat the roof yet? Maybe a spring job?

I just caution as I have seen people have lots of trouble with standard paint on roofs. If it peels, you're not going to be happy at all when it happens.

Excellent!
Love the pic of your sis looking into the 'picture window' :D

How's the hatch coming...is there another thread??

We had two more hatch through the night, so far all black/grey, one crested and with feathers on it's legs. Also two pipping this morning so should have at least five by EOD.

I will soon start a "Flock Expansion" thread but have started a cabin extension (12' by 30') and am beyond busy.

Your input is appreciated.

I do have an angle grinder but use of this with metal roof sheets is not recommended by the manufacturer, it is harder on the zinc coating that is used to inhibit rust. Metal snips is the way too go just make sure leather gloves and care is used as it will slice your hands in an instant. The snips are easy to use and one can follow a straight line much easier than with a grinder that sometimes has it's own mind.

I have been researching the roof paint/rust control issues. Gross process is clean (will use industrial soap and power washer), apply a rust inhibitor/converter, apply metal specific primer, paint with metal specific paint.

Timing is a consideration but I hope I will get a couple of days above 40F, then can paint. Touch and go at this point though.

The coop looks good. One question, how does blowing rain not come though those huge open windows? Doesn't the bedding and floor get wet?

In short no. It will come in the monitor (upper) windows at the moment as I have and need to install top hinged windows, will get this done in in the next few days.

As to the large front windows very little rain or snow enters; it is a function of the design (Prince T Woods, search for Woods Fresh Air Poultry Houses). I also will not be heating during the winter.
